Help with 5th level spells

Good day eveyone

My wizard just turned 9th level and I am kind of at a loss when comes the time to choose 5th level spell. This wizard is a transmuter (heading for the Archmage PrC with transmutation and charm as specialized school).

I was thinking about taking Teleport (always very useful) and Telekinesis. The problem is that on paper, TK seems pretty weak. Of course, I can use the sustained force to move an opponent out of combat and keep it there (and maybe drop it when he is at 100 hundrerd feet in the air. Look, it's raining trolls! :D) but I feel I would be more useful castig some Polymorph other spells (twice per round, thanks to Haste :D). A DC24 fortitude check is kinda hard to resist when you are a spell caster :)

The violent thrust doesn't seem very useful. I can push someone 10' away (possible AoOs, prone opponent who must come back to the melee (other AoO possible)) but the effect (1d6 of damage) seems pretty weak for a 5th level spell.

By the way, no one in my gaming group would accept the 2000 shuriken or arrows thrown on the ground and TK on a single opponent for uber damages. So that suggestion is out ;)

Could some of you help me understand what can be done with TK and/or suggest other attack spells that could be great to have? I was thinking about Hold Monster but I would prefer to remain in the transmutation school (my DC is much higher for that school, having Spell focus and greater Spell focus).

We have access to everything Wizards publishes. Please don't suggest spells or strategy taken in books from other d20 companies.

Thanks!

what are you barred school(s)?

If you have Magic of Fareun take a look at 'Simbul's Spell Matrix'. Its a 5th level Transmutation spell

In addition, 'Force Wall' (Evocation) is a great spell

Since you're also specializing in Enchantment, how about Teleport (no way around this great spell) and Feeblemind (nasty one against other arcane casters)?

If you did not drop Evocation (I suppose you did, but maybe you chose Conjuration as your prohibited school) and are allowed spells from the Magic of Faerûn supplement, you might want to take a look into Firebrand!

Other decent spells include (but are not limited to):

Rary's Telepathic Bond
Dominate Person
Hold Monster
Magic Jar
Fabricate
Permanency (permanent Detect Magic is pretty cool)
Kiss of the Vampire (Magic of Faerûn)
Energy Buffer (Tome & Blood)
Ghostform (Tome & Blood)

Bye

As an offensive weapon, TK isn't very great unless you are a Psion. The Wizards TK spell is mostly usefull for it's utility applications and, at best, a backup combat spell. If your other Spell Focused school is Enchantment, I'd go with Feeblemind. This spell will effectively take any single intellignet creature out of the action and it's an awesome magekiller spell. Using Feeblemind, my group of 6-8th level characters made mincemeat out of a 14th level Red Wizard. Granted, if he didn't fail his save we were all toast but it was one hell of a moment.

Sorry if this doesn't help much but TK just isn't much of an offensive spell unless you count that 1000 daggers-in-a-bag nonsense. TK is one of those spells which shines in the hands of a creative caster, though, so it's a great spell. It's just not an offensive powerhouse.

My Wiz also just hit 5th level. I chose Teleport and Magic Jar. Magic Jar just has so many uses... and provides the opportunity for some really fun roleplaying!

Why Telekinesis that big troll out of combat when you can take over his body and attack his allies? Fun.

Thanks for the help so far guys and gals (who knows! ;) )

My banned school is, most of you guessed it, evocation. Except contingency (which is very near the top of my 'great spells I never had the chance to cast' list), I don't think I am missing much.

Keep 'em coming, please! You've been a great help so far. I do fancy myself as a creative spell caster but TK's utility in combat eludes me.

The problem is that Spell focus Charm will not be taken before 15th level (level at which I will qualify for the ArcM PrC). Feeblemind, hold monster, and dominate person are all very cool but that +4 to DC for spells from the Transmutation school is hard to forget.

BTW, Teleport is already on my list. I took it as one of my 2 spells when I got to 5th level. Tk was supposed to be the 2nd one but I will reconsider after what I read here today.

Thanks again!

I had overlooked that one. Do you get all the stats of your target (BAB, # of attacks, etc?) What about Supernatural, extraordinary and spell like abilities?

What if the magic jarred creature casts spells?

Sadly, no... you don't get the creatures EX or SU abilities. It's more fun to try and convince its allies to kill you!

But Evocation is my prohibited school as well. I didn't realize this ... there's one spell that you must take:

Shadow Evocation!

Now you can cast Fireball and Lightning bolts ... pretty handy. Sure, they get an extra save, but its worth it.

Ghostform (transmutation spell from T&B) is the best 5th level spell.

It provides almost unequaled defense, mobility and (with improved invisibility) concealment. Never go dragonhunting without it.

And you can cast spells, hidden in the rock with only your eyes jutting out... Cool! :D

Lucius Foxhound: Where's that Shadow evocation you're talking about? Shadow feats from FRCS? loks promising, especially if I can finally get my hands on Shadow contigency (did I tell you that I love this spell? ;D)

See ya all later
