Help with a Character idea

Angerland

First Post
Friends and I are starting up another regular game and I was thinking of a new character. I was thinking of a Woodd Elf Ranger-Rogue...what do you all think? I like this better than the scout because of the sneak attack but also some of the other Rogue abilities are , to me more useful than the scout. This may not be the most min/maxed friendly combo, but any help you could provide.....

ps MY FIRST POST, yah me! :D

Welcome on the boards.
I remember not long ago a thread concerning a ranger/rogue build, but I do not subscribed this thread. :( IIRC it was in the rules or general forum..

I've built 2, one I'm playing in Living Enworld (he's only level 1 though, so rogue at the moment).

I think it works well. Both need light armor, and have several abilities that compliment eachother. I think it's as good a scout as the scout class, with what ends up being a slightly better BAB.

If you want to go ranged with the ranger, pick up precice and point blank shot feats, and then maybe weapon finesse for when you have to get close.

If you go two weapon, you may still want to go weapon finesse and accent your dex more than your strength, unless you plan on using 2 of the same larger weapons, then power attack becomes usefull (and I think there's a feat that lets you do this at -2/-2 eventualy).

I had thought that I would go the melee route with the ranger , but take ranged feats. Not totally ranged feats but a few at least so I would be a good archer and melee fighter. We are starting at 3rd level so I was thinking Weapon finesse and point blank shot (or precise, whichever is the first one for all the rest)

Rolled up my Wood Elf Ranger Rogue last night. I tried to find the format someone was talking about for posting characters but didn't seem to be able too. I will keep it to just the important facts though. he is Level 2 Ranger, Level 1 Rogue. His name is Galadel Siannodel
Str-17
Dex-19
Con-12
Wis-15
Int-10
Cha-11

HP-16 AC-19 (Mithril Chain shirt)

Feats-Weapon Finesse, Point Blank Shot, Track, Wild Empathy, plus trapfinding and sneak attack from the Rogue. He has the Melee combat style, but I will be taking plenty of shooting feats as well, unless you all think differently.

We decided that the Swords from Races of the Wild that are of Elven make are not exotic weapons for Elves so he uses a Thinblade and a Lightblade.....a dd8 anddd a dd6 damage respectively plus crit on an 18-20 x2. Weapon finesse works for both of these weapons.

I also have an Elven craft Long bow...basically can be used as a quarter staff if needed.

The character is basically a scout for an Elven Lord of some kind. About to strike out and begin some adventureing on his own. Our world setting...any tips for making him the best he can be?

5 ranks minimum in survival, knowledge nature, move silent, hide, spot, listen, and search. Other skills that might be usefull are jump, climb, swim, open lock, disable divice, sense motive, and balance. If you want, tumble is good, but probably not a high priority for the character.

5 is a good safe point with most skills, since you get synergies at 5, and after that it's just one for one. Do keep those important skills high, but if you feel you're good enough, feel free to get a second skill. Personaly, I might swap his Con, Int and Cha around to get a few more skill points, but it will cost you a few hp (con ends up being 9 till you get your L4 boost). But that's me.

Keep in mind, 1 point in some skills is more important than 1 point in others, depending on if you can use them untrained or not.

IMHO, two-weapon dagger specialist is a fun route. You can throw daggers, you can go stabbity-stab TWF with them, they're commonly found and easy to hide.

You can throw in some Fighter levels to have enough feats to go TWF and Rapid Shot (Quickdraw, PBShot, Rapid Shot, eventually Weapon Spec too).

I enjoyed making a shortspear warrior that worked similarly. No TWF with that, but you can throw a ton with quickdraw.
