What about using a two-handed shield? The stats would be like a Tower shield for defense and cover, but would have a bonus to shieldbashing since it uses two hands. Both ends could be enchanted just like a double weapon. Think of it as a flat, thin quarterstaff with handles, really. Give it a low damage die (d4 or d6 for each end) because the point of this character is to defend, not attack.
