Help with a wizard build for Savage Tide

Howdy, all. I'm relatively new to 3.5 and am going to be playing in a Savage Tides campaign. I've been elected to be the party wizard. I'm going with grey elf for story reasons, +2 dex & int, -2 str and con, 25 PB. All core rules are allowed, plus most options from the Races Of X and Complete X are in. Any thoughts as to my progression? I'd REALLY like to start with a 20 INT, but not sure other than that. Archmage starting L15 might be fun but I'm not sure it's worth it for all the feats. The 7 veil PRC is off the table.

Thanks for any help!

Do you have Complete Mage?

If I were to amke a new wizard, I would be very tempted to got for a specialist and jump into the Master Specialist prestige class starting at level 4. Full spellcasting, and quite a few good abilities on the side.

But in an adventure path, deciding to go specialist is a hard decision, as the first two (I have not read DT yet) had a lot of situations to use all kinds of magic. But with a few spells *cough..orbs..cough* a conjurer is probably your best bet for an all-around specialist caster. I would give up necromancy and enchantment, but a lot would disagree due to the False life spell.

Another choice is what version of a wizard do you want to be. There are tons of alterante classes around these days, and each can change your wizard in strong ways. In PHBII the Immediate Magic (PHB II, page 68) lets you give up your familiar for a good set of abilities depending on your specialization, and Focused Specialist (Comp. Mage, page 34) lets you cast a lot more specialty spells at the cost of more general spells.

As for stats , I would not go with a 20 int. You really don't need it, and buying an 18 with that point buy will hurt your constitution and dexterity too much. I mean, you want at least a 12 con after the elven reduction. Also I would not go with an 8 strength, either.

Good luck with your game.

I'd probably go with:

Str 9 (base 11 - 2 racial)
Dex 16 (base 14 + 2 racial)
Con 12 (base 14 - 2 racial)
Int 18 (base 16 + 2 racial)
Wis 8
Cha 8

I put the 9 in Str, because it is the only stat that a single point helps in (carrying capacity).

Thats a bummer that IotSV if off the list, because it is a way cool prestige class. Archmage is definitely worth it, IMO. There is nothing wrong with playing a straight wizard. I also really like the Domain Wizard variant from the SRD, if your DM will allow it.
