Help with Awakened Gorilla Monk

Another option could be the Hazodee from Stormwrack. They are more agile than tough, but are interesting, including the gliding ability.

They have no LA, so they are playable right off, and seem to me to make good monks.

If that is not an oxymoron (Sorry, monk-hater over here)

Ape stats are pretty much the same as an ogre. I'd say if you're really dead set on a gorilla you're out of luck unless the campaign is starting off fairly high level.

Savage Species has an anthropomorphic ape listed at 2 racial HD and no LA. At +2 str, +6 dex and +4 wis, I'd be surprised if any DM allowed that without a level adjustment.

Disclaimer: This is probably not the advice you are looking for...

Flesh out the concept some more, get some of it down on paper...then sit it aside in a notebook you save just for these ideas.

Come up with another character concept that will work for this game. Eventually, when the stars align and a game comes along where you can really take advantage of the Gorilla Monk, dust off that notebook and break it out.

I have found over the years that shoe-horning an interesting concept into a game where it won't really fit (because of aesthetics or logistics) does nothing to satisfy my urge to play that concept. I'll just reflect on how cool it "would" have been had I not had to cut corners.

Eventually, the right game will come along, and the Gorilla Monk can come out to play. :)

Just have your DM make a homemade Awakened Gorilla for you.
Off the Cuff I would say:

+2 Str
-2 INT
-2 Cha

+4 racial bonus to Jump and Climb Checks.

that should work for a LA +0 Gorilla.

Another option is just swap out some monk abilities for some more gorilla inspired ones. Unearthed Arcana has some alternate calss features for the monk though none are what you want. However, the Barbarian does with the Ape Totem. So, figure a way to combine the two and combine with a LA +0 option other people are giving you.

Old World of darkness & Call of cthulhu both would work for this. Maybe 2E. 3E is more codified, every GP accounted for and counted on. You have to be trying to break a LA to have it be playable.

I was more referring to a game where the players might start at 10th level, or he might join a campaign at 9th level, or 12th level or the like. Otherwise, I agree with you.

Exactly what I'd suggest. Nobody will know if, under the fur, you're really just a human wearing a monkey suit. Use appropriate stats for another creature and call it an ape.

A minor flavor suggestion, though: for my money, chimpanzees make better monks.
