Help with Planar Ally by Domain

maggot

First Post
In order to tailor planar ally creatures by god, I came up with the concept of a list of applicable Planar Ally outsiders by clerical domain. So gods that give out the fire domain to their clerics would have a specific list of creatures they send when planar ally spells are cast. The cleric casting the planar ally spell doesn't need to have the fire domain, but if his god does, he might very well send a fiery ally.

Does this sound like a good idea? Anyone want to help?

I'll post some examples later.

Fire Domain

The Fire Domain is quite easy as there are lots of choices in the MM:

Lesser Planar Ally (6HD or less)
-Fire Mephit
-Medium Fire Elemental
-Flamebrother Salamander
(Any of these can be advanced to 6HD if desired)

Planar Ally (12HD or less)
-Large Fire Elemental
-Efreet
-Average Salamander
-Very Young Fiendish Red Dragon or Very Young Celestial Gold Dragon (depending on deity's alignment)
(Any of these can be advanced to 12HD if desired)

Greater Planar Ally (18HD or less)
-Huge Fire Elemental
-Noble Salamander
-Huge Efreet (16-18HD)
-Juvenile Fiendish Red Dragon or Juvenile Celestial Gold Dragon (depending on deity's alignment)
(Any of these can be advanced to 18HD if desired)

The dragons with templates and advanced hit dice show the problem with this method: you need a lot of stats that cannot be easily grabbed. With the fire domain, you don't have to include these, but it gets harder with other domains.

Good Domain

At first blush, the Good Domain is kind of easy, but then again there aren't that many creatures that are just plain good, so I have to include LG and CG as options. I wanted at least three options for each spell level, so I had to give the Celestial template to ordinary good creatures in order to make them outsiders. And I wanted as many options for chaotic as lawful, so sometimes I had to include a suboptimal choice for balance.

Lesser Planar Ally (6HD or less)
-Celestial Giant Eagle (or Owl)
-Celestial Centaur
-Hound Archon (if lawful)
-Bralani (if chaotic)
(Any of these can be advanced to 6HD if desired, the Centaur can be given two ranger levels)

Planar Ally (12HD or less)
-Astral Deva
-Avoral
-Leonal
-Lammasu (if lawful)
-Trumpet Archon (if lawful)
-Coatl (if lawful)
-Ghaele (if chaotic)
-Lillend (if chaotic)
-Celestial Androsphinx (if chaotic)
(Any of these can be advanced to 12HD if desired)

Greater Planar Ally (18HD or less)
-Planetar*
-Huge (18HD) Avoral.
-Hound Archon Hero (if lawful)
-Huge (18HD) Lillend (if chaotic)
(Any of these can be advanced to 18HD if desired)

*The Planetar is troublesome even though it is within the spell HD limit, it can cast 9th level spells, so using an 8th level spell to get someone who can cast 9th level spells seems a bit out of wack.

I really like this idea. But as much as I would like to help, I don't think I have enough experience to do so. :\ Even so, I would still love to see this it get done. :)

Law Domain

Now something tougher: the Law Domain. I can't fall back on the celestial template (well, I suppose I could), and the axiomatic template isn't core (and thus not in the SRD I'm using).

Lesser Planar Ally (6HD or less)
Azer Monk 4
Formian Taskmaster
Achaierai (if Evil)
Hound Archon (if Good)
(Any of these can be advanced to 6HD if desired)

*The Azer Monk is strange, but the one of the only LN outsider I could find.

Planar Ally (12HD or less)
Formian Myrmarch
Inevitable, Zelekhut
Trumpet Archon (if Good)
Bone Devil (if Evil)
Celestial Guardian Naga (if Good)
Fiendish Dark Naga (if Evil)
(Any of these can be advanced to 12HD if desired)

*Yeah I said I would fall back on Celestial/Fiendish, but the Guardian Naga/Dark Naga is too cool not to do it.

Greater Planar Ally (18HD or less)
Inevitable, Marut
Inevitable, Kolyarut
Hound Archon Hero (if Good)
Horned Devil (if Evil)
Huge (18HD) Celestial Guardian Naga (if Good)
Huge (18HD) Fiendish Dark Naga (if Evil)
(Any of these can be advanced to 18HD if desired)

*I don't like have two of the three options be Inevitables, so I used the nagas again.

I messed up

I've made to mistakes that I just caught: First, I put Couatl as CG instead of LG. So I had to redo the Good domain, but while I noticed that the celestial template does not change the creature's type to outsider. This invalidates a bunch of the work I've done.

I could replace "celestial" with "half-celestial", but that seems weird. In addition, it means that all the creatures you can planar ally for have spell-like abilities and that is kind of lame.

Hey, that's cool. I'm glad you like the idea. Right now I'm trying to figure out how it works with the various domains. I'm working up to the harder ones. I want to try Magic next. Then something esoteric like Luck, Travel or Knowledge.

Plan on doing the additional domains found in Deities & Demigods too?

Well, "plan" might be a bit strong. I'll see if I ever get the core domains done first.

I've been using the SRD. Are the Deities & Demigods domains the same ones shown on http://www.d20srd.org/indexes/divineMinionsDomainsSpells.htm? If so, I'm interested in doing a couple of those to fill in my campaign's deities' domain lists. But in general, I'm sticking to the SRD.
