dragon-lord:

There are two sides to the stat cards. The first side has the stats for the Miniatures game while the second side has stats for the Roleplaying Game (RPG).

I would recommend you get the Dungeons and Dragons Player's Handbook and read through the entire book (well, maybe you do not need to read all the spell descriptions.)

I don't think he wants to play D&D, just D&D Mini's.

dragon-lord, have you read through the manuals? Do you have any specific questions?

Well, I meant that the mini's sets aren't divided by book. I don't know that there's any reason-or-rhyme to how they decide what monsters go in what set. Maybe theme.

And the Monster Manual 3 isn't divided by minis/non-mini's. The MM3 creatures are in alphabetical order, like the other books.

The minis are essentially all over the place from many different sources. So it can be hard to find a specific one. The monster manual has a lot of monsters listed alphabetically.

Also, did you check out Mark's link: http://wizards.com/playdnd/playdnd.asp ? That's a great link. If you click "Play the Basic D&D Demo" it will help you learn to play D&D.

Welcome to the game!

It can be confusing at first. :) I remember when I had the old Red Box Basic D&D set, trying to figure out the rules. :) Stick with it and you'll discover a wonderful hobby. The cost-to-enjoyment ratio is unparalled.

I don't have much to add in the way of useful suggestions... Maybe you can find a D&D group in your area to help ease you into the game? It's always so much easier to learn new things from somebody who already knows them.

Happy gaming!

Boxed set

I have bough the boxed set (I have Pokemon-itis),

It has several minis and the stat cards for each. The stat cards are like the standard ones (although on poorer quality, perforated stock) with one side having the details for the minis game and the other having the details for D&D. There are the icon pre-generated characters (with some skills left out for a basic version of the game), and instructions for a basic (lite) and standard game of D&D, along with a mini-adventure utilizing the minis. The monster stats are re-printed in the manual, so you could actually just set the cards aside, or use them for reference, as you see fit. There are also some large terrain tiles (about the size of 3 standard mini-game terrain tiles) for use in the adventure.

All in all I think it's a pretty good introduction to the 3.5 game
