D&D 5E Here's why we want a Psion class

Except the fact the WotC changed their thinking in the most recent UA.
What components are in the new UA?

Edit: I hope you aren't talking about the spells with a psionic THEME, because those aren't psionics. Any old spellcaster can learn them, psionic or no. They're just spells.

What types of abilities do psions have?

The broad approach of "doing everything" is out. WOTC doesn't want a full psionics class stepping on too many toes.

to quote myself from another Psion thread, I made a list of all the spells that seem to be doing an iconically psionic thing in response to someone.


I'm not overly concerned with role filling, but I want to narrow it down to what people want. So, I'm approaching this from a perspective of what do we already have, and what do we actually need to add.

For example, spell stealing is the unique 17th ability of the Arcane Trickster

So if you were to give that to a Psion, you would need to make sure it was a high level ability and consider how this effects the Arcane Trickster who previously was the only person capable of pulling off this feat.

The same with using Invisible Mage Hand as a minor Telekinesis. In fact, a lot of the Arcane Trickster abilities fit with what I could expect to see from a Psion

And, in that same vein, if I make this spell list based on the things you said and some of my own ideas, what do you think is missing from it? I know some of it is duplicated, I'm just grabbing from lists

The spell then requires no verbal component, and if you rolled the level of the spell or higher, the spell doesn’t require somatic or material components either.

If you don't roll high enough the spell will require somatic and material components.

A good chunk of those appear to already be in the game. Once you've worked out which of the others are necessary, we should have an idea of the things that need to be added.

There is nothing sexist or misogynistic about an adolescent power trip (i.e. high level, powerful characters played by adults) in a game. Grow up.

Rather than nitpicking about the details, what niche do we want to fill with the base class?
The Mystic is dead precisely because he could do too much stuff at once. While Psionics cover a whole lot of areas, what would the baseclass do?

1. Full Caster without components.
2. ???

Speaking from a gameplay and mechanical perspective what would be desirable for the absolute bare bones chassis before we even start thinking about separate disciplines?
Expanding on that, what are the limits? What are things a Mystic should NOT be able to do to let other Full Casters have their place to shine?

I'd personally suggest to start tackling ressource management first. Even though the Psionic dice look random at a first glance, they're actually pretty damn stable as long as you have a size 3 die and a 1/day refresh on demand. I like the idea that even a level 5 Psion could keep slinging the equivalent of 1st level spells basically at will as long as he keeps rolling. Looking at progression I'm looking at Warlocks. Replace short rest Spellslots with Psionic dice. What you can use them for increases in power as you level and caps out at 5th level Spellslots in term of powerlevel.
Your more powerful abilities match Full Caster Spellslot level and power, but automatically reduce die size, potentially even by multiple sizes depending on how much you "overchannel" compared to your "at will" spellslot level.

That would be an entirely new system, but built on the new Psionic Dice mechanic. And familiar enough to integrate in 5E since it's using Spellslots like any other current caster.
Add in an automatic increase of your Psionic Die size on a Short Rest for good measure and make sure you can still use Cantrip level Powers if you are tapped (without getting to roll the Psionic Dice to increase or deplete it).
