Hexes or Squares?

Uhm... and what's stopping you? Surely not those little lines painted on the floor! At least hexes make it easier to count how far you're walking in that straight line.

Nonsense. Note that you'll have exactly the same problem on a square grid if you're trying to walk in a straight line which doesn't line up with one of the horizontal, vertical or diagonal grid lines.

The grid doesn't dictate how or where you can walk. Of course you can walk in a straight line! The grid is just a tool to tell you how far you've moved and who you are considered adjacent to, etc. And especially for measuring distances, a hex grid is MUCH easier than a square one!
