Hexes or Squares?

Which do you like best for combat maps?

Hexes have always seemed cumbersome to me.

But, really, I think, barring a few exceptions, one's favorite method is going to be whatever method you were introduced to first. So, if you were raised on the hex, you're going to like the hex, and if you were raised on the square, you're going to like the square. And, I was raised on the square. That would make an interesting poll, I think.

And, another good thing about squares is that its easier to make your own mat out of a whiteboard, a ruler, and an exacto-knife. Mmmm ghetto-board. :)

Squares. It's simple, efficient, and right for the times---and the only non-complicated approach I can wrap my small mind around during play.

Plus, as others have mentioned, it is in the core rules.

I used to prefer hexes in D&D 1.e. But I really like the way things have been done in 3.5, and battlemats and minis (and yes, tac-tiles) work really well for our group.

Squares indoors, hexes outdoors.

For the purposes of your poll, I went squares. For while I can tolerate squares outdoor, I absolutely cannot abide hexes indoors. *spitooey*. :)

What if you had hex tiles?

then my perfect right angel only world would be in complete chaos.

If I had my way, we wouldn't use minis and maps, but the rest of the guys like them so we do.

Prefer hexes but not rabidly.

Only six surrounding an individual to get in cheap shots is fine. Area of effects model better. Diagonals work better.

However rooms are usually rectangular and most maps (and battle maps) come in squares.

Not really a big deal either way.
