Hexes or Squares?

Which do you like best for combat maps?

Hmm... I am going to have to try and map some indoor things with hexes. I imagine they would work well with caverns, but not with square hu-man buildings.

Come on people, nobody is going to want to have both square and hex tiles, miniatures with square bases and minis with hex bases. Nobody would ever go for one inside, one outside.

The problem with squares is that diagonal movement gets difficult.

The problem with hexes is that it's impossible to run in a straight line in two out of four cardinal directions.

I'll take squares, but not rabidly so. ;)

I voted for squares. But really, the answer is: "It depends". My main concern is mapping. For caverns hexes are best, for just about anything else - squares! Although figuring the area of effect for a spell is way easier with hexes. It just depends.

I voted squares as we use them the most in my game, but I have heard of people who use hexes for overland travel and squares for towns, crawls, etc., which I think I would like to try sometime.

Squares, for the same reason as Psion. I'm fine with squares for both indoors and outdoors, and I like hexes for outdoors, but I don't like hexes for indoors.

Tiles? Miniatures? Who said anything about them?

Now two pads of grid paper, one with a square grid and one with a hexagonal grid... that I can deal with.
