Hey Rangers! What is the *best* choice in Favoured Enemy?

Thanks Li Shenron for the clarification. I geuss in 3.5 I would pick either undead or humanoid at low levels and then switch to dragons or whatever later after the first bounus is aquired.

Magical Beasts (half the MM)
Funny enough, we once had a ranger with magical beasts as favored enemy and I can't recall that bonus coming into play often (he should have picked aberrations :D), altho we did meet quite a diverse bunch of monsters.

Humanoid (Human) and Undead seem like good choices to me.

Of course, it depends a lot on the campaign world.

An elven ranger in The North (FR) would likely have Humanoid (Orc) as favored enemy, for example.

IMHO, the player can't/shouldn't create his character in a vacuum. The first thing is to go to the DM and ask "Hey, what kind of creatures are the most common threats around here? Are we plagued with goblinoids, undead or what?" and the two of them can decide the best Favored Enemy based on that.

For a hunter, the best 1st level choice would be Animals.

For a mageslayer, go with Humanoid (Human), Magical Beast (familiars) and Constructs.

For an undead hunter, go with Undead (duh!), Animal (children of the night...) and possibly Outsiders (Evil).

For a skirmisher, Humanoid (Human), Humanoid (Goblinoid), Humanoid (Orc).

As a sidenote, I created a subtype called "Orcoid" that included orcs, half-orcs, ogres, orogs and ogre mages. Makes for a more versatile choice. And yes, it covers Giant (Orcoid) for the ogre and ogre mage.

How about lycanthropes?

If this is Eberron, maybe the ranger was a deadly archer who worked with the Silver Flame to take out werewolves and other lycanthropes during the Last War, earning him quite a nasty reputation among the local shifters as well as others. He's trying to put the past and the Church behind him and start over, but there are certain people who haven't forgotten what he did during the war and who plan to make him pay for it.

Besides, I've always wanted to use the moniker of "the Wolfslayer" for a character.
