hiding = invisible?

This came up in our last session and it drove me nuts that I didn't have a clear answer.

Anyway, simple scenario. The rogue is hiding and readies and action to attack anyone who comes into range. Hapless thug #2 comes strolling by and gets a blade in the gullet. Now I know that the thug looses his Dex and the attack is a sneak attack.

My question is does the rogue get a +2 to hit as if he was invisible?

Nope, AFAIK there is no bonus. It's more similar (while not equal) to being flat-footed.

In the PHB, when it says the attacker gets a +2 for being invisible, it doesn't say that this has to be invisibility (as in the spell or similar effect). I think there's room for interpretation here. After all, from the thug's point of view, the attacker isn't seen--therefore invisible.

Nope. The rogue in hiding can be seen, he just hasn't been, (The hapless thug could have detected the rogue if he had been loooking and had a high enough spot roll) So yep, he would be flat footed but I wouldn't give the rogue +2 to hit. To me the +2 from invisible comes from being able to move around and place the blow exactly where it would be more effective- a hidden character is static and thus cannot place the blow as precisely as an invisible character.
