• NOW LIVE! Into the Woods--new character species, eerie monsters, and haunting villains to populate the woodlands of your D&D games.

Highest level you've played

AD&D (2e): ~12
3E: I think I got as high as 14 as a player, but that's because we converted our 2e characters. With characters that actually started at 1st level, I think the highest I saw, as a DM or player, is 9th.
4E: Got to level 4 last night!

20th, in Shackled City. (We got our asses handed to us in the final battle.)

16th in 1E/2E, a thief/acrobat. And 16th in 1E/2E is equal to about 35th in 3E.

1e - Many characters, but I don't recall even hitting 10
2e - TONS of characters... highest was low 20's (had a few get this far)
3e - I DM'd almost exlusively for 3e... the few times I played it was never above 15 or so (some one-shots, some starting in the 6-8 range)
4e - This is the most recent so I know these specifically (I currently play in multiple campaigns and have participated in some one-shots)...

Goblin Rogue (9 - 10) *Switched from Bugbear below*
Bugbear Ranger (4 - 9)

Mino Warlord (3 - 7)

Goblin Rogue (1-3)

Human Wizard (12) *New campaign starting at this level (12) playing 2 characters*
Dwarf Cleric (12) *see above*

-- Plus a few one-shots (4e) as I mentioned

1E: I'm not sure, it was almost 10 years ago, but i'd say about level 11-12 (as a player)
3E: Level 12 (as a player)
4E: next session the group will reach level 6 (as DM)

I normally DM so here are the average group levels we've gotten to..

BECMI: 26th (Started at 1st)
1e: Never played it, actually...
2e: 4th (Started at 1st)
3e: 16th (Started at 1st)
4e: 5th (Started at 1st), though we did a one-shot with 26th level characters (to wrap up lingering plotlines from that 16th level game)

I rarely play D&D these days, so I have to go back to the games of my youth to have any high level characters.

For AD&D 1e, the highest was a Druid of 14th level. I started Rantaur Fairchild (half-elf) as a 1st level character, and played him for years.

In D&D (RC) I played a 9th level Cleric, who died when he fell into a pool of lava trying to rescue someone who was about to fall in. He's actually turned into a demigod of the unicorns of the world, but that is another story.

Other then that, I really have not had a chance to play high level characters.

All of those are in 3rd edition; I don't remember any of my 2nd edition characters going so far.

- Played as a 15th level Barbarian/Ranger in a heavily modified FR campaign.
- DMed for a party of ~13th level in a FR campaign.
- DMed and played in one-shots for 17th-20th level characters.

One of my gaming groups had an epic game with 30th level characters, but I wasn't able to join them at the time; besides, 3rd edition epic play isn't really one of my favorite campaign options.

Cheers,

In 2nd edition, my highest-level character was a 14th-level human mage (with the witch kit from the Complete Wizard's Handbook).

In 3rd edition, my highest-level character was a 20th-level human sorceror, specializing in blasting with some control (deliberately sub-optimal so as not to totally overshadow the non-casters).

In 4th edition, my highest-level character so far has been a 16th-level elf ranger (archer build, Sylvan Archer paragon path) multiclassed to cleric.

Of course, none of these characters were played up from 1st level.

2e - 14th level in a game that ran through 3 years of college, though the game was breaking down badly at that point (and since my PC was a wizard, I was doing the breaking).
3e - 20th in a game that wrapped up last month after over two years of play (with some interruptions for other campaigns)
