Nobody ever said anything about taking the paladin away. We're just talking about opening it up to be a champion of your ideology of choice.

Well, some have suggested ripping the paladin out as a core class, or making it a prestige class. I like it as is.

Would a Chaotic Good "paladin" be any less able to fulfill Sune's wishes? Sune teaches that we should "follow our hearts to our true destinations." (Quote from FRCS). Wouldn't following one's heart be difficult for a LG character?

Sure they could. So could a Fighter, or a Ranger, or any class. That's because they worship that god. :) And there's your 'paladin'. Also, they wouldn't be forced to adhere to the strict code of the Paladin. The paladin isn't following 'What's in their heart' unless what is in their heart is upholding the ideals of Good, and the Good of beauty (not the corruption of it), the Inner beauty of Sune. Sadly, the FRCS doesn't offer any information on Sune's paladins other then that little paragraph that talks more about the aligment restriction then anything. :(

The 'ideals' of the paladin could be adapted for ANY class. A wizard could live by the same code as the Paladin. But as you notice, the Paladin is not a Template.

Re

Dragongirl,

I bet you can see now why they didn't remove the Paladin class from Dungeons and Dragons. There may be alot of folks who would like to see changes, but there are even more who love the class with a passion. I do not think there is another class in the game that causes such indepth debates.

I know I love my Paladins. I prefer them Lawful Good and dressed in shiny full plate wielding a holy sword riding a great steed. There is no other class that truly captures the essence of the holy knight.

I usually get bored trying to play any type of fighter other than a Paladin. Most other fighters just aren't gung ho enough for me.

Clerics and Rangers.

But that's a balance issue. :)

Or...

a halfling Paladin in leather armor, wielding a shortsword of holy might, inside the warbase of a CE warlord, leading his band of halflings in quietly, to handle the Warlord, without harming his relatively good mindslaved guards.

a kobold paladin on his war-wolf or Battlelizard, Holy Crossbow in hand, laying down the smacketh.

a paladin monk.

Here's why Paladins are Lawful Good in D&D.

Paladins represent an ideal. They are meant to be larger than life heroes. The best of the best. So, they had to be the ultimate embodiment of Good.

This means they do the things that regular guys like us don't. They are ready to sacrifice everything solely in the defense of innocents. They take honesty and fair play very, very seriously, and don't take short cuts in such matters just because it's easier. They don't associate with persons of dark or corrupt character. They have a code that they follow to the strictest letter.

To follow such a code of honor so strictly, you must (in D&D alignment terms, which are simplistic in many ways) be Lawful.

Holy Liberators, the chaotic good cousins of Paladins, have no such code. They just have to be good guys, and they also fight for freedom. But you know, that really doesn't capture that "going a step beyond what regular people do" feel that Paladins do.

I'm a big fan of paladins. In Paragon Badger's Sandman's Binding game on the In Character forum I'm playing a LG fighter that I see as bringing a lot of paladin type attitude, only without the powers. I'm tired of only paladins being the self sacrificing good guys! :D

PS

Paladin's of every alignment

For me it's clear: with the PrCs BlackGuard, and Holy Liberator the indicatiors. There should be a "Paladin" PrC for every alignment, and that the core class should be removed.

Some have said that only the 4 standard classes should be used - and although I see their point, I'm not sure I agree.

There is a call for more classes that make use of CHA as an attribute. I just don't think Paladin is the right fit for a core class.

You guys don't have anti-paladins in your campaign? My players are going to seriously regret meeting my anti-paladin shield basher.

Seems easy enough to adapt the Paladin core class and make an opposite, evil version.....

TLG
