Historical roles : most important factor?

Any flack over Antoni playing Ahmad ibn Fadlan?
Isn't he a Spanish Moor? :p

Ranger, Do you expect them to shoot in hawaii too?
Nahhh, I expect them to start production shooting in Canada, like they did Jackie Chan's Rumble in New York. I'd like to be able to see a snow-capped mountain when I look toward Diamond Head Crater. :p :p

I personally question his acting skills, but given the track record of Hollywood, He's as close blood wise as big names go currently.
I question many actors' acting skills, like Tom Cruise when he did Risky Business and then jumped over to Interview with a Vampire.

The Auld Grump - A film that may have caused John Wayne's death by cancer many years later.
He probably forgot it because I mentioned it near the start of the thread. ;)

Wasn't there an old viking flick that featured african-americans as the long ship's crew? I seem to recall that was due to union interference. I haven't seen it but it does sound cool to me. I've searched Imdb and Google but I can't seem to find it.

I interpreted "alienness" in this case to mean portraying a person very different from oneself (as opposed the the habit many "name actors" have of playing themselves in whatever role) but I may have been generously reading into it...
From what I expect of fusangite, I interpreted it to mean "people were a lot more different in the past than we usually give them credit for, and that's what I want to see portrayed."

I could have been wrong too, though...

Uhm..IIRC that was only in stage performances due to the physical needs for the character. As women were lighter it was easier to manipulate them in the harness needed for the illusion of flight and thus it was always portrayed by a woman.

It's also because Peter Pan is a huge part that has to carry much of the production. They want an adult in that role. But because Peter is an adolescent male, it's usually a better fit to take an adult woman in drag to than a deep voiced, fully grown adult male.

But ultimately, that's a tradition in performance, not who the character really is and that's what this debate has really been about.

Plus the recent Peter Pan movie, with Jeremy Sumpter as the title character, was a very nice movie. I won the DVD and I love to watch it every now and then.

Plus Jeremy Sumpter looks just like a D&D elf, sans pointy ears (shorter than an adult human, chaotic, quick, etc).

Not just any viking film, either. The Norseman starred Lee Majors. And is one of the worst movies I've seen.:)
