Hit Me Baby, One More Time...

Y'know...I'm just not a Chris Farley fan, so I'll probably pass on it. Heck, since the early 80's, I bet I've watched SNL maybe 5 times. The crop of comedians to come out of SNL in the last 15 years or so, with a few exceptions, just aren't funny to me.

...gettin' old, I guess.

Aren't we all. I don't think any of the SNL cast is consistently funny, though -- including the classics. In fact, many of those are almost painfully unfunny, or at most, are simply milking a funny concept without doing much with it except counting on the concept itself to sell the sketch.

But all of them have brilliant moments. Some of Chris Farley's brilliant moments include the Matt Foley motivational speaker and the Chippendale's dancer audition.

And the Schmitt's Gay ad, but that's on the best of Adam Sandler. A comedian who's work I despite, by the way, but the best of is still worth seeing.

Maybe I'll check it out then. Like you, I really don't find Adam Sandler funny. And Will Farrell, don't get me started on how unfunny I think he is.

I watched it... *hangs head*...

Performers were Loverboy, CeCe Peniston, Arrested Development, A Flock of Seagulls, Tiffany (I think that was it). The performers each did one (or their only) hit, then came back and did a cover of a current pop hit. The audience voted on who they liked best, and that artist or group got $20 thousand dollars for their favorite charity.

A Flock of Seagulls were the most changed in their appearance by a long shot.

How kindly and neutral you make it sound. Flock of Seagulls (at least the lead singer) has gone to seed. I've never seen this band, or any of the others on this show, perform live before, so I don't know what they sounded like other than the studio edits you hear on the radio. Flock of Seagulls' singer sounded tone-deaf and uninspired, like bad karaoke.

Loverboy's exhumation was no less sad. Again, the music sounded just like it always has, but the vocals were strained and slightly off-key. Loverboy, and Flock of Seagulls both have . . . put on weight.

C.C. Peniston is famous for a heavily edited piece of music that you still hear on the radio today - she didn't do a bad job with it, but it's not really appropriate for live performance. Her contemporary cover was well-done, but nothing to write home about. I've seen better on American Idol when the box DVRs the last few minutes before House.

Arrested Development won because they turned out, hands-down, the best performance of the night. Tennesse sounded like it always did, which was good, but their comtemporary cover was terrific. It sounded fresh and was easy to get into.

Tiffany's voice sounds to have actually improved since childhood. She's carrying a few extra pounds since having the baby, but doesn't look bad. I Think We're Alone Now sounded uninspired. I think maybe she's just not interested anymore in the song that made here. I'm sure that by now, she could do the song in her sleep, but what I'm not sure of is whether or not she did do just that for Hit me Baby One More Time. The cover she did sounded good, but again, nothing to wirte home about. She has a new album coming out soon. If I get around to it, I'll put it on my list of things not to worry about.

My hat of modern pop no know few limits, though Arrested Development (which I agree was the best of the night) did a pretty inspired cover of Los Lonely Boys' "Heaven" ( a song I really like). Peniston did some Faith Hill song, and Tiffany did a Kelly Clarkson song. I can't remember who FoS and Loverboy covered, as I was on the phone.

edit: I realize I've said both Loverboy and Arrested Development performed the best, but after thinking about it since I first posted, I think AD had to come out ahead.

I watched and was rooting for Flock of Seagulls. Then I heard him sing. Boy, he sucked and I'm being kind.

They all sounded less than spectacular and to make matters worse they sang shortened versions of their songs, though I suppose that could be a good thing.

I didn't listen to Arrested Development's first song because I didn't listen to them growing up.
I heard half of their cover song and it was obvious after that they'd probably win. Before that I'd have gone with Tiffany, but that might have been her cleavage talking.

Next week is The Knack and My Sharonna. Let's hope for the best.

I had no idea this was on. I must watch. Especially to see Vanilla Ice since he was so adament about never going back to that persona when he was on the Surreal Life.

I like the Ryan Cabrera song but "Hero" just got on my nerves. It whined worse than Luke Skywalker could ever whine.
