Hit points are essentially the size of a specific creature's fight. In other words, they're a measure of how much you can take and keep fighting - of how long you can withstand adverse situations and remain able to effectively act or react to them.

It’s called game or gameness, and yes, I think gameness points (gp) would be a good alternative name for hit points, especially in a game about dog PCs. It’s especially apropos of dungeoneering in that gameness is used as a measure of a terrier’s natural aptitude for going down holes and having encounters with badgers.
