(Samurai seem weak compared to fighters in the core OA book...

really? i thought with the ancestral daisho (sp?) a bunch of feats and more skill points they were better than fighters...but i've never played one or seen one played in a game

I really enjoy OA, although I enjoy Rokugan even more. We've run a Rokugan / Dragonstar game on-and-off over the last year and it has been a wild ride... Shugenja, Samurai and Ninja are powerful beasts.

(Samurai seem weak compared to fighters in the core OA book, but when you add in all the cool Clan Style feats from Rokugan, the fact that the Samurai bonus feats include the clan style feats makes the Samurai powerful)

Well, I don't have any of the Rokugan supplements, but then, samurai may have fewer feats than a fighter but aty least they have a ebtter Will save... and more skill points, IIRC.

In a standard-blanace D&D game, the acenstral daisho is not that much of a great power, more of a money-sink. After all, you will generally have found a good weapon at that level, and the royal shugenja are likely to be able to make the weapon that a high-level samurai might need.

In a campaign setting where touching the dead is taboo, it works very well and can be potent, but if that social taboo is non-existang and the samurai character can pcik up weapons off slain NPCs...

And the reduced feat rate compared to the fighter is the main difference most people see. Until we had the Rokugan clan sytle feats, a single level of samurai and then multi to fighter made more sense feat-wise... (munchkin says - Samurai 1, Ranger 1, Fighter X).

Regardless, I found them significantly more powerful once we added the clan feats. Those things are ferocious.
