Never really liked the game, magic so I never looked into the background. But themed magic is a good plan.

In my Homebrew I only made some hints as to arcane magics, so I could still do something in that order.

*puts on thinking cap*

I dont particallary like colours as names though, but the basic idea could be the same. Specialization not in the 8 types of magic (as per PH) but to special "flavoured" spell selections.
Easily done for things like Pyromancy (sounds more arcane).
Other Specializations could include:
Protections, enhancements, technomancy, manipulatorium(biotech), etc

So the choice of mentor/patron in the arcane arts (wizardry) would be more importent. Also If you know your up against a student of "the great Harada" , trying to get info on his speciality would be usefull.

What do you think?

Each color has a personality not easily summed up on a few words. The more you see of their spells the more the symbolism of each color makes sense.

I know what you mean, but two things:

1) Colours sounds so "nonscientific" and IMHO wizards are scholars. So I would geuss there are less "common" names for the different specializations.

2) I think that for Xiatha a more "narrow" specialization would work better. About the width of the PH-specializations I think, only in other fields, that can transent the types of magic boundries.
Eventhough some might be similar to the original, like necromancy.

Also I would make it non-"magic the gathering" even though the basic idea is similar. Its sucha different game than Roleplaying I wouldn't want the assosiation (but thats just me :D)

:D

Anyway, IMC I have a number of different disciplines of magic, schools of thought as it were, though not altering the fundamental 8 schools rules system. The Cryosian magocracy practices cryomancy, the battle-mages of the Flame Guild pyromancy, the Manipulators of Carthagia train and teach in Manipulation (a manipulator battle-surgeon is a wizard in demand amongst the military :) ), thaumineers who blend magic and mechanics (strongest in Huron), the 'divine sorcery' of Naseria where the sorcerer-nobles consider their magic to coem from the lineage of the deity Naskha, the highly disciplined wizards of the Crystal Tower of Adbar (a small but very elite and picky group), the Truth Seekers (an elite sect of Naserian sorcerers generally specialising in divinations), the umbramancers of... oh, shouldn't reveal this one yet in interests of plot development :D, and the list goes on. Basically wizards tend to follow a particular school of thought or concept behind their training, though magic isn't, for instance, rigidly split into 'colours'.

Thats what I was planning. But I also want to combine that with the specialization a wizard can do. So if the wiz is a specialised fire mage, he can use his additional spell etc from a fire list. ( not coompletely sure how to do the restricted spell, but for fire that might be water etc)

He I did tell you I inspired a part of xiatha on your game :)

Copycats, the ultimate praise :D

Well, I need to zoom off to return my gf's backpack that I'ev ben using for lugging d&d books down to my gaming session every monday evening, so I'll be back in a bit :)
