[Hivemind] Running around like headless chickens

Blackshirt, not to be the ogre here or something. But have you let "third parties" look at your stuff? I know you think its awesome (and it might be, I haven't seen it so I cant judge) but are you sure it is awesome? several hardcore books is a lot of effort. It better be worth it!

Yes; although I haven't let many people look at it(as most of it is not done and still in my head), people have told me it is good. I really do need to get more down on paper though. I've shown it to my players and I'm gonna try it out on the new players that I'm getting, and I described it to a friend who's into fantasy literature but not RPGs and his response was that he would consider playing in such a game world.

I don't think I'm doing anything godkillingly innovative, but it's more the way that it all fits together; I'm working very hard to make sure that it all fits together in such a way as to maintain a fantastic feel to it all.

Woah, that's... a big step to take. I know that just writing Steam & Steel was a fair bit of effort, but starting up a new d20 company & writing an entire setting up at the same time would be a real challenge.

I'm not sure as to the OGL status of Arcana Unearthed stuff, but depending on how much stuff you want to use from it, wont you need permission from Monte & his company to do it?

Yes I will; thankfully, I read on his site that Monte is offering a special free license to use his AU stuff; and really it's all rules, like the magic system, most of the classes(all except the Champion, which is being replaced by the Spirit Warrior), including an expanded Totem Warrior, and the equipment section. However, I plan on contacting Mr. Cook in the near future to get everything squared away about the license and everything.

My hope is to have at least the monster book ready by Next Gencon, which I plan on attending. Hopefully, the monster book will be judged good enough(I'm really pouring an effort into it) to help generate enough interest to do the Player's Guide and the Setting/Dm's Guide.

Also Maldur, the fact that three hardcover books is a big commitment is one of the reasons I was originally looking at self-publishing; if things didn't work out, I'd have only released the monster book, which is more broad and generally applicable, so it'd at least have a possibility of making money on people not interested in the setting.

As mentioned above, self-publishing is going to be a very risky venture. First you have to actually get all the stuff written, art done and formatted, then actually printed, which is going to cost ltos of money, then you need stores to actually buy your product, and they're going to be less than eager to jump on a new product by a new company. Even then, you're screwed if the product & setting simply doesn't sell very well. Since it sounds like you're only really interested in stuff to do with your setting rather than a broader range of products, you'd most likely be best with going to a pre-existing d20 company and hoping they pick up your setting.

Good to know Carni. I'll definitely wait and hope for it to be picked up; if not, I'll look into self-publishing or just keep it for my homebrew, ya know?

But then, you guys will never see my junk!
