I have a friend who has had a game store (in one form or another) for over 10 years. He is a hobbyist, but he is also a businessman who understands retail. He's lost money on his store in the $1000-$2000 range each year. He was audited by the IRS. His comment to them about it:
It's my hobby. How many people spend more than that on their boat per year, on travel, club membership green fees and clubs, or on cars.
I know a number of RPG and CCG or CMG fans that dump that much in a year into the games. He has a great attitude about it, I think.
