Hobgoblin Fluff

Hobgoblins are slave takers. Works for me.

And I love the comparison of Kobolds and Goblins. Tunnel-fighters vs Cavalry/Archers. Never thought of that. Thanks.

But why do they look so cuddly, Claudio?
Beacuse it was 2000, and everyone was cuddly and tingly from the new millenium!

:D

Check out Pozas Art Pack: Hobgoblins for my more recent take at the hobbos.

Makes me happy, though I'll admit I'm one of those gamers out there who never really modeled hobgoblins on Romans or samurai or whatever. I've always used them as Brian Froud-ish goblin-types in stained armor, the demented black knights of the upper class to the vicious peasantry of the goblin lower class. They (and goblins) even took over the spider motif, since I wasn't into dark elves running it into the ground. This bit of fluff makes hobgoblins more goblinish, and I'm in the camp that sees that as a good thing. If one is to have many races of humanoids, I do like it better when some of them are offshoots that come from a central source, such as all goblins/hobgoblins/bugbears being fey that became mortal, or whatnot. (Add elves to the mix, and you're golden.)

As a side note I thought the best fluff from ToB was the hobgoblins as the founders of blade magic etc.

Because of the art in the 1st edition MM, I have always considered hobgoblins to have a slight Asian/Oriental feel.

The flavor's all wrong. You can go combine Flavors A and B if you want to; I'm just choosing not to.

I suggest a different ratio of ingredients and a longer cooking time. Try favoring Flavor-A by 3:1 over Flavor-B, add a tablespoon of spicy mustard, a quarter-cup of capers, and leave it in the oven for 20 minutes longer. Trust me, once you try this mix, you'll want to start a brand new thread to let everyone know how much you love it. ... I can't promise anyone will care about that, either, but what the hey.

You have two creatures filling the same niche/theme.

You say that like it's bad... :)

I like having multiple creatures doing the same thing because that makes for a diverse world where different creatures have primary ascendancy on particular areas. Areas where only X exists, areas where only Y exists, and then the really interesting areas where X and Y are battling it out amongst themselves. A monster's role as to how it performs in combat (tactics, strategy, purpose) and how it fits in with social and political possibilities in a world shouldn't be conflated, IMO.
