A player in my Scarredlands campaign wanted to create his own prestige class - a guardian of clerics and holy sites of his patron diety. We got together and came up with the Holy Guardian, borrowing from the Squire of Legend from the Complete Champion book. Personally I think the class is better suited for an NPC as most class abilities are geared toward assisting other players, I also feel like some tinkering will help the class, but the player thinks the build we came up with is perfect.
Balance issues are important to me and any criticism or comments are welcome. Thanks.
Holy Guardian
Requirements:
To qualify to become a Holy Guardian of Madriel a character must fulfill all the following criteria:
Ability:
Base Attack Bonus: +5
Alignment: Any non-chaotic within one step of the deity’s alignment
Feats: Endurance
Skills: Knowledge (religion) 3 ranks, Diplomacy 5 ranks
Special: Must be a member of the church of Madriel and a member in good standing of the Sacred Order of Holy Guardians.
Class Skills:
The Holy Guardian’s skills (and the key abilities for each skill) are: Diplomacy (cha), Gather Information (cha), Heal (wis), Intimidate (cha), Knowledge (religion) (Int), Listen (wis), Ride (dex), Sense Motive (wis), Spot (wis), Survival (wis), Tumble (dex)
Skill points at each level: 4 + Int modifier.
Good will saves, BAB as cleric, HD: D10
1st level - Divine Empathy
2nd level - Sanctuary
3rd level - Draw upon faith – 1st, Divine Endurance
4th level - Shield other, Faithful Companion
5th level - Redeemer’s Mercy
6th level - Draw upon Faith – 2nd
7th level - Sacred Guardian
8th level - Gathering the Flock
9th level - Draw upon faith – 3rd
10th level - Planar Guardian
Divine Empathy (Su): Through a devout prayer given at dawn, a Holy Guardian may form a one-way empathic link between himself and a disciple of the Guardian’s chosen faith. This empathy functions up to one mile and resembles the empathic link forged between a wizard and his familiar.
The disciple must be within sight when the prayer is started for this link to form. If at any time the disciple becomes aware of the link he may choose to make a willpower roll (DC 10 + Holy Guardian level + Charisma modifier) to sever the bond. The bond lasts up to a week or until the Guardian or the disciple severs the bond.
Sanctuary (Sp): The guardian may cast the Sanctuary spell a number of times per day equal to 3 + charisma modifier.
Draw upon Faith (Su): As a full round action you may channel the divine healing energies from within your bonded ally (assuming she can cast divine spells). In order to do this the ally must be comatose, disabled, dying, fascinated, helpless, nauseated, paralyzed, stunned or unconscious. You can channel a healing spell from the ally’s spell list into the ally herself (or substitute a heal spell for a randomly determined spell in memory). At 3rd level you may channel cure light wounds, at 6th level cure moderate wounds and at 9th level cure serious wounds.
Divine Endurance (Su): While within a mile of his bonded disciple a Holy Guardian can grant his charge the saving throw and skill benefits granted by the endurance feat. If the disciple already possesses the endurance feat these bonuses are affectively doubled.
Furthermore, the Guardian can choose to forgo sleep or go with half sleep provided his disciple is within 1 mile. If the Guardian receives half a night’s rest he must make a DC 15 constitution check the following morning, success indicates he functions as if he had received a full night’s rest. For each additional night of half rest a cumulative +1 is added to the DC.
If the Guardian wishes to forgo sleep entirely the DC of the check is 17 and rises by a cumulative +2 for every successive night after the first.
Guardians who cast spells still require a full night’s rest to memorize spells.
Faithful Companion (Ex): You learn to place yourself between your bonded ally and harm. If you and the ally within 5 feet are both subject to an area spell or effect that allows a Reflex save for partial damage, you can grant your ally a bonus on her saving throw by taking a penalty of equivalent magnitude on your own. The value of the bonus and penalty can be any amount up to the value of your base Reflex saving throw. You must decide to invoke this ability before either you or your ally has attempted the saving throw.
Shield Other (Sp):The guardian may cast the Shield Other spell a number of times per day equal to 3 + charisma modifier.
Redeemer’s Mercy (Su): Once per day you can negate a single critical hit scored against your charge provided you are within 30 feet of her when the hit is scored. The ally still takes normal damage from the hit.
Sacred Guardian (Sp): You can grant one ally within 30 feet immunity to one of the following effects for a number of rounds equal to Holy Guardian level: disease, exhaustion/fatigue, mind-affecting spells and abilities, negative levels, or poison. You choose the effect when you activate this ability.
Gathering the Flock (Ex): By making a diplomacy check you may spend up to 1d4+1 hours scouring the local populace and gathering the faithful to assist a local cleric or temple of Madriel in desperate need of aid. The number of people gathered is equal to the result of the diplomacy check modified by the size of the population (see below). The frequency this can be done also depends on the size of the local population. Gathering the flock for frivolous reasons can make future attempts less effective or altogether ineffective.
