I was just curious as to how many of you use published material for you campaigns or how many of you homebrew. I know in my old games I used to use a lot of published materials, but over time was using less and less, until now I use only dieties, and sometimes basic world components.

So what do you use?

Depedns on what I'm playing and running and what the group wants. Right now all my games are in published settings but we alter bits and pieces here and there to fit our game. Even when I was running a homebrew I borrowed from campaign settings to save time and when it worked well with my design.

Published settings provide me with creative input, but I seldom play a setting "right out of the box". Too much love for tinkering with the rules, I suppose ;) or rather: a history of homebrewing. I like the creative exercise, and published works provide me with a basis from which to work on.

Homebrew all the way setting wise; rules, feats, spells, monsters can come from any number of sources that I have collected over the years.

Depends.

Both my current Modern games and M&M game and my previous Modern, M&M, and Sidewinder games are 100% homebrew, as was my threepointoh D&D game.

However, if I run another D&D game, I'm pretty sure I'll use the Wilderlands of High Fantasy and Ghostwalk and create just the adventures. First, I love those settings, (b), I'm not as excited about the idea of creating my own fantasy campaign-setting as I once was, and 3., I'd rather devote my creative energies to more Modern and Past games for which I have far more plans and schemes than time.

My answer, by the way, was "Mostly homebrew..." in expectation of someday running a Wilderlands game, but I'm still the ultimate GM, IMHO... ;)

The only reason I didn't claim to be "the ultimate DM" is, like the rest of the responders so far I would imagine, I know I read so much published stuff that I incorporate that into my game world(s). But honestly its mostly homebrew. Thats most of the fun for me.

I went with the mostly published assuming you mean adventures used during the campaign also. I DM in the Forgotten Realms with very little modifications. The adventures I use range from ones I create to published adventures tweaked heavily to published adventures I tweak just enough to fit into the current campaign.

Mostly published, though the Judges Guild Wilderlands setting does require a lot more input from the GM than may be needed with the FR. okay you can be minimalist with the Realms, but the published stuff is there, with JG you have to fill in the blanks yourself and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Personally I like to use published settings because I don't have the time nor the desire to sit there and design a world from the ground up. But once I have that world, I like to add and subtract, fiddle, and make that world my own.
