Tony Vargas
Legend
It's not the character, but the cantrip, that's doing something it normally wouldn't - Its essentially metamagic. Why shouldn’t the marshal allow other characters to do things they can’t normally do?

I don't have a problem with that. You might, and that's fair, but I'm pretty sanguine with the idea as a building block. It's not the character, but the cantrip, that's doing something it normally wouldn't - Its essentially metamagic.
Don't get me wrong, it's a very cool idea, and I like it. It's just it would be perfect for a presumed magic oriented sub-class, and we haven't gotten to that, yet, so far it's just base class & Vanguard (presumably a Bravura, rather than an Iron Vanguard).I don't have a problem with that. That's fair. I wasn't married to sticking it anywhere in particular personally. Even if we don't have a specifically magically oriented subclass, it might fit best in the lazylord full support subclass rather than as a standard class ability.Don't get me wrong, it's a very cool idea, and I like it. What on earth is an Iron Vanguard?Don't get me wrong, it's a very cool idea, and I like it. It's just it would be perfect for a presumed magic oriented sub-class, and we haven't gotten to that, yet, so far it's just base class & Vanguard (presumably a Bravura, rather than an Iron Vanguard).
The guided strike allowing cantrips can be a full class ability. The elemental aura, whatever it ends up looking like might, and I agree with Tony, be better as a subclass ability. I was personally think that the cantrip cast would a complete action sacrifice, combined with the Marshal's BA, but that the effect could be sexy enough to make the cost worth spending in the right circumstance.@Fenris-77 okay. Maybe we can split them into two abilities? We already have guided strike allowing cantrips. Maybe a bonus action just says “when the ally next deals damage with a cantrip, XYZ”?
That costs 2 mettle to combine into a big off turn boom for the caster, but that’s no different than giving a weapon user an attack and an upgraded damage boost.
5e gave even the most-traditionally-mundane of all classes, the fighter, a wizardly archetype. I think, to really fit in with 5e, some sort of Arcane Battlemaster (that was even a warlord Path) or mage-captain, that learns some magic to better synergize with casters seems more than reasonable. That's fair. Paragon Path, only prior use of Vangaurd the choice of name evoked. What on earth is an Iron Vanguard?
I be ok with an arcane subclass, I think there's some very cool stuff we could do with that.5e gave even the most-traditionally-mundane of all classes, the fighter, a wizardly archetype.
