Homebrew world, how big?

Small is good...and remember, if you're making a large world, the bigger the world, the more work you have to do to make it work. It's more believable to have working areas, rather than vast expanses of "um...hold on one second." My homebrew world is medium, but we're working towards publishing with it, so we want as much as we can get in the way of details...

Start small. Expand later. My campaign, which comprises of at least 3 groups of characters, takes place in one particular developed kingdom. Eventually, when the great airship is done, one of the groups will travel beyond the sea to see what's out there... but it's a while off, so I'm not going to worry about building it yet.. :D

My primary world (named "Earth") is exactly the size of the Earth... guess what I'm stealing for my maps? ;)

Of course, the setting is far more than just one planet... there are other planets, and other planes.
