Honeymarsh Academy (D&D3.5) Chapter 2

Kytheria

Intimidation and diplomacy... Not anything I know anything about. The poor fey, I wish I could somehow help in to find the Light. I fear it is too late for one such as it though, the darkness is ever consuming him, I can sense it even now...

Remaning silent during the questioning of the Redcap, Kytheria will however remain alert for any signs of recovery, although unlikely.

(DM: ah, Seeks the Darkness can probably do this.. His diplomacy is higher, and he is phrasing it as 'we'll see what we can do about setting you free'. So we'll use that, with the same DC. Speaking sylvan makes the redcap more comfortable so it adds a +2 situation modifier.)

The DC is 23. Seeks the Darkness rolls a 28.

The redcap looks around the room shrewdly. "Fine. Sets me free and give back my cap, and I'll tell you... but no tricks! I've been wanting off this becursed island anyway."

"The witch we call Cora hired and some of my gang to guard her caves in the Wastecomb Hills last year. Just a month ago, she comes home with a big package.. and tells us someone had to guard her old potion shop in town. I hates town, but it's easier to steal a bottle or two there, so I went. Got paid in platinum coins. I was just about to jump onto one of the airships anyhow. "

Bahuman whispers to the others, "Ah.. the Wastecomb Hills. It seems we have a clue..." The half-giant has no intention of letting the redcap free, of course.

"Arvin? Can you translate for the others?"

Seeker holds his hands up and nods. "**Fine. No tricks.**" He turns to the others, "No tricks. We'll play this fairly."

"**You want out huh? Well, no one was seriously injured...**" Seeker looks sideways at Arvin and then at Bahuman, "**...so when we're done here I don't see why we couldn't escort you out of here. Just a few more questions first though as we won't be able to ask you any more questions once you've left.**"

He pauses, thinking before continuing. "**Decribe this witch, Cora, for us. How long have you been working for her? Can you point out her caves on a map for us?**"

Seeker paces a bit as he thinks, "**How many others are there in your gang? Are there any kind of fortifications there? How big was the package and did you see what it was?**"

He turns to Mr. Osbry, "Do you have any liquor around here? Our friend here is thirsty."

OOC: ** designates Sylvan.
Diplomacy +14, Indimidation +10, Sense Motive +5, Bluff +9

Arvin acts as translator for Seeker, parroting his conversation with the redcap back to the rest of the group in Common.

"Osbry, didn't you say this guy was some kind of well-known local brute?"
Arvin whispers. "If there's a bounty on him we can't very well let him go!"

Out loud Arvin says **"Seeker, if you intend to release him, we'll need to extract some kind of binding oath, to ensure he won't just rat us out to his mistress"**

Bart listens to the conversation he can understand, "How can you think of allowing an evil like it go free?"

Seeker looks at Bart for a moment before replying. "Umm... sir knight, if you hadn't noticed, he's not exactly a demonspawn from the deepest levels of the abyss. If you don't give him the opportunity to be good, then how will he ever learn? If we were to arbitrarily kill him just because you percieved him to be evil, wouldn't that be an evil act? Who are you to be passing sentence on him?" He pauses, and then continues. "Besides, there are bigger fish to fry than this little guy. If you want to destroy evil, go kill a pit fiend."

"Look, we'll ask him if he'll behave himself. That way you can assauge your consciance." Turning to the redcap, "Do you promise to be a good little redcap when we let you go? And not go around killing and stealing except when necessary to survive?"

Bartlin: Queens Knight 6

Bart shakes his head, "No no no. I never mentioned killing anyone. It should be turned over to the authorities. I understand you do not see the corruption in it's withered putrid soul but I do and I know the evil it can produce. Any oath you force it to make it will warp to it's own ends." He walks over to the creature and uses his sense evil ability.

The human frowns, and says "Mayhaps that's true. But if so, how does that make him any different from the rest of us? And what would locking him up accomplish, aside from draining the coffers of the local jail. He already says that he wants to leave. Let him leave I say. Just because he might be evil doesn't mean he doesn't have the right to freedom."

<sigh> Narrow-minded holy champions. Can't for a minute make thier holy dogmas jive with the way life actually works can they. "Besides, what law has he broken? And before you say that he attacked us, remember that it is we who invaded a place that he was paid to guard. You can accuse him of being rash maybe, but it's perfectly understandable when you stop to think about it."

Seeker smiles. "I mean, what would you do if you were guarding the Queen's temple and a bunch of heavily armed and armored motley's strode in, like they owned the place, and started poking and prodding holy relics? Especially if you had previous experience with yokels like them who had attacked you in the past."

"Jailing him will solve nothing. It puts him in an environment that will simply force him to perpetuate his previous acts. He will never learn to sympathize with his jailers and understand why they do what they do... I say, let him go. He's already be dealt a sound defeat. He doesn't have his weapon, nor his hat, nor any money. While he may aquire such things in the future, perhaps he's learned something from all this."

"That's not entirely correct."
Arvin scratches his head thoughtfully. "As I understand it, there are some oaths you can be sure the fey will not violate. I'm hardly an expert though. Maybe one of the teachers would know for certain?"

"I do agree that unless we can be certain he's going to be no further danger to us, we can't release him. Furthermore, how can we trust any information he gives us? I think he should stay confined here until we check out his story."

Arvin pauses, his brow furrowed in thought. "If he plays straight with us, and we can ensure he won't harm us again, then and only then can we release him."
