I agree that doing a knowledge check shouldn't cost an action, however, during battle i'd limit it only to those trained in the skill.
I like using minis and grid rules, however, I have come across the need in 4e for adhoc describing scenes for quick 'skirmishes' where I don't feel the use of minis is required. Currently I just ad-hoc everything and let the players describe how thier powers get used. If I felt players got roughed up, I'd doc 'em a healing surge instead of tracking HP for that small skirmish. It'd be nice if the rules supported this better.
