Horizon Walker

Hi,

Does the Horizon Walker (DMG - p190-191) need to be on a plane or visit a plane to get the Dimension Door ability (shifting - planar) for Plane Mastery?

Just for confirmation, once they have the Plane Mastery, they can use it on any plan..right?

Cheers
TIA

No, the dimension door ability only works on planes with the shifting trait. This is clearer in the DMG than it is in the SRD. The bonus to fly speed from the weightless planar terrain has a similar restriction.

While the fly speed is clearly limited to planes with no gravity or subjective gravity, it is less clear they can only plane shift in planes with the shifting trait. It does mention that the ability is based on knowing how to use such traits to their advantage, but it doesn't say they are limited to such planes.

One could certainly argue the dimension door works on any plane, or on any plane connected to a plane with the shifting trait. If a GM ran it either way, I wouldn't complain.

In any case, I certainly wouldn't consider a dd 1ce/day to be unbalancing.

I don't have the DMG here, but the SRD certainly does not state that the shifting trait is limited as you say. Do you have the DMG text available?

Relevant SRD text:

Terrain Mastery said:
Horizon walkers take their terrain mastery with them wherever they go.

Planar Terrain Mastery said:
Planar terrain mastery functions just like terrain mastery, except that the horizon walker can choose one of the planar categories at each level

Shifting (Planar): You instinctively anticipate shifts in the reality of the plane that bring you closer to your destination, giving you the spell-like ability to use dimension door (as the spell cast at your character level) once every 1d4 rounds. You gain a +1 insight bonus on attack and damage rolls against outsiders and elementals native to a shifting plane.

The only ability that is limited to a specific plane (in the SRD) is the Weightless planar mastery.

The dimension door ability works on every plane. I've got confirmation from the Sage on this; I can post the emails if you like.

HW abilities work everywhere unless specifically restricted. The Weightless mastery has such a restriction, but Shifting does not, so your DDoor works just fine on the Prime Material.

The Horizon Walker gets to do this every 1d4 rounds, not once per day.

Hi,
The Sage advice answer, would be nice. It does say it that plane mastery works like terrain mastery, but shouldnt you at least visit the plane at least once to get the ability?

The visiting plane is more for roleplaying than anything else, but if your dont have a day or two to waste in the adventure to travel off to the plane, then you may not have the ability as soon as you level.
I feel its too easy to get all the benefits of a class and forgot all sacrifices you need to make to become that class (this applies to many classes). Though in saying that, the nature of our games doesnt realy lend to that and being DM, i probably should have made it more clearer at the being of the game, because thats the way i would prefer to play.

It can be assumed that the character has already been to plane at least one, before adventuring and therefore knows about it. That should be in the players background info, but that requires plenty of forward thinking on their part. :)

You're quite right and good point. (My horizon walker never got to that level.) Even so, that's not so out of bounds for a minimum 11th level character.

I agree. On the other hand, it indicates that the Weightless and Aligned abilties could use some beefing up to be competitive to other abilities of that level.
