Horrors of Hell... (PG-13)

I think Eric's Grandma should be ok with these, nothing worse then you'd see on TV. Anyway...

As a few of you might know, I'm working on doing a random encounter chart for each layer of the Nine Hells. I've made alot of progress but since I've picked up Barlowe's Inferno (an excellent art book showing illustrations of hell), I realize that it's missing a bit. Most of my entries read like this:

Avernus: Hunting Patrol looking for runaways (2 Soulsniffers, 1d4 Hell Hounds, 1d4+1 Barbazu and 1 Cornugon)

I know that it's up to the DM to give that entry a "hellish" twist... but I'd like to add a bit more flavor to my gigantic list of encounters. I've updated my Soul Shell entries (Soul Shells are the petitioners of hell). Keep in mind that any references to Overseers or Devils, means a roll on the Overseers and Devils chart (not included here, I plan to post everything once I'm done though).

Soul Shells:
1-6 Soul Shells laboring (reparing creating, destroying structures, sometimes simply labor for it’s own sake) while a cruel Overseer punishes those that lag behind in the labors. (5d10 Soul Shells and Overseers)
7-11 Soul Shells laboring (repairing, creating, destroying structures, sometimes simply labor for it’s own sake), their Overseers rests nearby. (5d10 Soul Shells and Overseers)
12-13 Soul Shells laboring (repairing, creating, destroying structures, sometimes simply labor for it’s own sake), their Overseers are nowhere to be seen.
14 Soul Shell being haphazardly tortured or bullied by a Devil. (1d4 Soul Shells and roll Devil)
15 Soul Shell being meticulously tortured by a Devil. (1d4 Soul Shells and roll Devil)
16 Soul Shell being tortured and physically modified by a Devil. (1d4 Soul Shells and roll Devil)
17 Soul Shell scavenger gang (2d6 Soul Shells). They try to take any goods they come across.
18 Newly arrived and confused Soul Shell.
19 Soul Shells without an Overseer trying to flee their masters. (1d6 Soul Shells)
20 Soul Shell of someone that the PC’s knew.

Anyway, I've decided to add a 'Horrors of Hell' entry...

Horrors of Hell:

A hideous cacophony of shrills and odd piping noises fill the air. A group of Soul Shells are being herded forward by Devils. All of their heads have been removed, yet they remain alive, a choir of pain escaping from their wind-pipes.

A group of naked female Soul Shells, their chocked sobs barely audible, shuffle past. Bloated fang-toothed imps, infernal parodies of infants, crawl on their bodies suckling, gouging and torturing the Soul Shells. The women, seemingly unaware of their tormentors, will sometimes loving caress an imp as it bites at her flesh.

Soul Shells with missing limbs and other deformities hobble past.

Phelia the Home Maker
(This one is converted from a post by Warlord Ralts, http://www.realmsofevil.net/cgi-bin/forums/YaBB.cgi?board=ravenloft;action=display;num=1045946364)
Phelia is a startlingly beautiful woman with luminous bluish eyes and black hair sweeping down her back in a rich cascade. She gracefully dances through the streets of Dis completely naked, singing in dulcet tones. All who hear her voice flee, for while she dances, she is not a mortal creature, but instead she is unassaible by magic or steel. She dances around the victim, chosen for beauty or striking ugliness. Her fingertips a light, yet erotic sensation as she circles; all the while singing softly of love, home, hearth, and family. Then she slams a thin blade home, just beneath the right ear, pulls away the hilt, leaving the blade inside the skull. The victim is paralyzed from the neck down, able to live, all the while conscious and aware of their surroundings. Even the ability to use magics or psionics are destroyed by the blade.

She then waltzes the victim to her apartments, within an unusued ampitheater. There are small buildings, gardens, and even a park. Children, infants, elders, strapping young men and women sit at the tables or stand in the park, all artfully clothed and arranged. Phelia feeds them by casting create food and water, distending thier belly nearly to bursting, but feeding them for another week. She wanders among them, elegantly dressed, talking to them, and magic mouth spells reply to her questions or greet her as she approaches. At nightfall, her Unseen Servants walk the various residents to thier houses and thier lives become that of a typical upper class gentry, with wine, music, dancing, discussion, and even sex; all overseen by Phelia. Trespassers are attacked by the “city guard” who are propelled by her magics and who fearlessly defend their small town.

Inside Phelia's house dissicated and mummified man and small infant whom still move around and magic mouth spells hold coversations as if they were alive. Phelia treats them as if they alive in every sense of the word. And once or twice a year she "dances" for her husband, slowly stripping off her clothing until naked, then, with a shrill giggle, running off into the city, and soon, new nieghbors move in.

Anyway, I'd love to see your ideas, suggestions and basic concepts on what I could add to my 'Horrors of Hell' chart. Any and all help would be immensely appreciated . Thanks guys!

I'm not sure how useful it'll be to you, but I'd suggest picking up the Kindred of the East book "The Thousand Hells"; it really is a great sourcebook on infernal realms, it's given me some great ideas for Hellish and Abyssal realms.

I whole heartedly agree that Barlowe's Inferno is an excellent book. If this art inspires you I would suggest any of the works by H. R. Giger for further inspiration. His works scream out H.P. Lovecraft and Cthulu to me. Not really hell, but would work well.
www.giger.com has some of things to look at to give you an idea of what this artist is about.
