Horses at high level?

This is just funny. I like it so much I might make this character.

Alternatively, find a way to wildshape yourself into a centaur, and take advantage of the combat feats personally. :)

Centaurs don't get to use those feats. They get to use a lance as if mounted, but those feats do them no good.

The best warhorse is to make your PC the mount, and get a cohort Paladin to be the rider.

The benefit of using a more standard mount is that enemy creatures may stop to appreciate the horse d'oeuvres that you kindly provided.

Of course you are forgeting the ultimate in high level horses, Robilar's metal destrier, page 308 from the EPHB. You want something that will take a licking and keep on ticking, that is it. Just make sure to build on with everbright properties or a rust monster will ruin your day :)

Our DM allowed us at higher levels to take a special version of leadership which effectively made our horses a cohort, we simply advanced thier hit dice and gave them feats and skill points.

This worked pretty well with a game ending at around level 15.

I like the concept of a legendary horse, akin to Shadowfax. It could be part of a quest to the Beastlands or something along those lines. I see no reason why you can have an fiendish advanced undead necrotic ooze that inflicts vile damage but not a horse with more HP.
