D&D 5E [House Rule] Dropping proficiency bonus

Oh, and I remembered the number one reason I wanted to implement this.

Attack rolls. Specifically, the fact that you add one number to attack rolls, but a different, albeit related number to damage rolls. That trips up new people I play with, even moderately experienced people, over and over again.
Yeah, this one is definitely the worst offender, and always using skills with their default abilities doesn’t fix it.

Yeah, I have one player who, in particular, although his total (STR + prof) attack modifier is RIGHT THERE ON HIS CHARACTER SHEET, he still wants to add just STR to his attack roll... At least once (often more) a session we have to remind him to include his proficiency bonus.

I sympathize. There's only so much you or the rules can do. That's why I'm against over-simplification in general.
 



I agree on the saving throw issue. High level critters also have high AC that might be hard to defeat using only stat mod.

Also, your players must not be using buffs much, as those are the main source of complexity in my games.
 

How about non proficiency bonus being a third, rounded down. So Proficiency +3/Non proficiency +1. Proficiency +4/NP+1.P+5/NP+1.P+6/NP+2 ….. as otherwise at higher levels high DCs become too difficult for non proficiency skills etc with only your stat bonuses as they’re capped.
 

I love the d12 also, It solves some problems of too much spread of results for d20.
So as an easy fix I do d12+4 instead of d20, everything else is the same.
little more crits, but people love crits, so it's a double win.

Where do you use this rule?
It also allows for more natural ones, if that effects what you're using it for. (8.3% for crits/1s instead of 5%, for folks who don't want to look it up.)

Seriously though, I don't see PB as an issue at my tables personally... usually my players' issues are keeping track of their character features. I think some of them really wouldn't done better with systems that gave them less to deal with per character.
