House Rules/Homebrew changes to 5th Edition

Most of these have to deal with hit points, maybe rethink what hit points represent to you, because in the game they are not meat points. Hit points are a combination of luck, skill, divine intervention, endurance, and physical injury.

Forcing random hit points will lead to random rolls determining long lasting and very impactful things about the character, the fighter who gets a few unlucky rolls isn't good at his job.

Damage in this game is no joke, look at the bulette it can jump on a small group for 6d6+8 or bite a single target for 4d12+4, and is a challenge 5 monster. Thats an average hit of 30 damage with it's bite, average crit or charge with you rules of 56 damage.

I think it is best to play without house rules for your first campaign then adjust it to taste, be careful.

  1. Resting - Short Rests are now limited to 2 per Long Rest. You may spend as many HD as available, as normal. Long Rests now give you back your full HD limit (not half as in book) however, you no longer receive max Hit Points upon Long Rest completion, instead you must spend your HD to recoup HP.
  2. Hit Points per new level - 1st level equals max class HP, every level from then you must roll for HP, no "taking half" (as in book).
  3. HP/HD 11th level up - As of Level 11, you do not gain anymore Hit Points. You do still gain your HD up until Level 15.
  4. Gold/Equipment - Starting Gold will be rolled, you will not be able to take starting equipment, you must buy what you can with starting gold roll.
  5. Charge - A character may charge an gain the following benefits and penalties: Double damage on attack (overall damage i.e. if you roll 2d6, you would roll 4d6 - if you crit you would only roll 6d6, not 8d6) if you hit, but character suffers advantage attacks on them until their next turn (melee or ranged).

*I need to double check the charge rule in comparison to the martial characters abilities.*

Furthermore, does anyone think a rule for Flat Footed when surprised should be house ruled in place of Ad/DisAd?
Before implementing any house rule, it's a good idea to consider what the problem is that you're trying to solve. What are the particular issues that each of these changes is meant to address?

Thanks Guys. Im considering a few of them but have removed #3 and #5.
My issue is i feel its too hard to die in 5th, as do most of my group. So these are in attempt to make it easier to die (so death is a possibility in any situation and as such PC's are encouraged to think rather than attack all the time).
And its key to note I would always speak to my group before implementing any changes whatsoever.

Well, you could implement ONE death saving throw, instead of three. That's basically a save or die if you ever start your turn at zero hit points.
