Housing/Cars and joint wealth checks in D20 modern

Hey, I'm starting a new D20 modern game, and I had some questions... Specifically, if I'm understanding everything correctly, it's very difficult to start off with a car in D20 modern. The cheapest one has a purchase DC of 26 and in order to buy it automatically, you'd need to have a wealth of 16, which is pretty hard to do (assuming perfect rolls and min/maxing, the highest you can get AFAICT is 18). The average wealth rating seems to be about 7-10 depending on various factors, so players are looking at a pretty hard roll just to get a car which, I think, one could reasonably expect a character to start with.

Additionally, the housing is rather expensive as well... Granted, it's for buying a house as opposed to renting, but I've seen no rules about renting apartments, and in any case I think it's reasonable to assume that a character might start off owning a house/condo.

Also, I want to know if there are any official rules for having two characters combine their efforts to buy something. Two of my characters run a business together, so I expect it might come up pretty frequently. It already has come up because of the problem with the price of cars.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

the Wealth system is an abstract system.

The PC's are already assumed to have homes in which they live. Its up to GM abducation to remove wealth if they want to have expensive homes. But starting them with a 1 or 2 bedroom apartment is not reasonable for someone of a wealth of 6-12.

Cars are expensive :) The cost includes all the runnng costs (Gas, Taxes, Insurance) and there are other methods of transport.

Players can Aid another when making wealth checks, this provides a +2 bonus to the check (see page 91).

The d20 Modern QA (http://www.otherniceman.net/download) has a bunch of questions about the wealth system that have been answered by the writers.

Actually you only need a wealth of 6 to purchase something with a DC of 26. You can take 10 and 20 on purchases..even at character creation...granted might not leave you with a lot of wealth left for other things.

Characters are considered to be renting a place to live appropriate to their wealth level..what exactly that entails is between the character and the DM, costs for living expenses (rent, utilities, other mundane bills) are considered already figured into their wealth score. Now if they wanted a better place to live or upgrade their lifestyle I would charge them a one time cost to their wealth.

You could use the aid another rules to have the characters buy something. Also if their business buys you could give them a bonus to their purchase check based on how much the business is worth or whatever, but the stuff belongs to thebusiness and not the players.

Wow, I could swear I read something that said you couldn't take 20 during character creation, but I can't seem to find it now. Thanks, that solves my issues. :)

Actually, i think you just misread it, it says on page 91 of the MCR, in an example, that you can take 20. Why they don't always assume someone has taken 20 during character creation, I don't know, but it doesn't. It actually says that if you fail a check during character creation, you can't try again until after the game as started, but that's for the fools who didn't take 10/20.
