How big of a deal is treasure to you?

if there was no regular magic items handed out would it be less fun?

  • 1 - yeah it would be no fun, wouldn't do it.

I voted- wouldn't bother me at all, as long as the challenges faced in the campaign didn't require resources that were not available to overcome.

In straight up D&D under anything less than a master DM, it would bother me. Too many DMs are stingy with magic items, then act suprised when the party has extreme difficulty facing off against monsters later on, or when spellcasters completely and utterly dominate.

In a variant like True20 or Iron Heroes, sure, bring on the no magic items! My character should be a badass because he IS a badass, not because of his +1 keen vorpal elfbane hockey stick.

The poll seems to assume that all treasure is magic. As long as there's treasure...loot...booty...swag...stuff to be had, it matters not whether it's enchanted or not; a big bag o' gold to plow into building a castle is fine by me. :) But if there's little or no treasure of any kind, the fun level drops sharply.

Well, yes, I assumed that the poll was talking about only magic treasure. If there was nothing at all, that would certainly affect my enjoyment. At least, in a D&D-type environment. I don't need any form of "treasure" in games designed to simulate Star Trek, Doctor Who, or Star Wars (for example).

Voted true neutral: I'd love to play a game with low magic... on the provision that the rest of the world was held to the same low-magic rules.

And I don't just mean the NPC's, I mean the monsters AND the game world too!

I had a GM once who tried to make magic fascinating and exciting... so we started out at an advanced level with no magical shwag.

First things we fought? Trolls. Without a magical weapon, or magic spells, it's a damn sight into impossible to take down a troll without getting yourself killed in the process. We then fought more trolls before we got anything resembling treasure. And then? the weakest enchantment was a +6 item. (Magic fullplate, with energy resistance)

So, jumping from -masterwork- to -Godlike- was jarring and took me out of the game.
