D&D 5E How can I get Wrathful Smite on my spell list?

Wrathful Smite is only on the Paladin list. If I could do that I would be all over it.
Well, ask the DM. It is how I do it, other DMs I know do it, and even @Stormonu suggested the same thing because, frankly IMO, it is the way it should be. 🤷‍♂️

It certainly isn't "too strong" or anything, even granting half-caster access to cantrips. Having to use your fighting style for it is overkill.

I like the fighting style tie in for cantrips. I think it makes sense thematically, you are deciding what your character wants to specialize in. If you don't want to use your fighting style you can always get cantrips with a feat too ... or get a fighting style with a feat. It is not overkill per se, but then when you consider these two classes are already significantly more powerful than Barbarians, Fighters or Monks and this would serve to widen that gap.

It is better for Rangers than it is for Paladins though because cleric cantrips are mostly not great. I almost always take the cantrip fighting style on Rangers I play. I don't play Paladins often, but when I do I usually take Protection or Great Weapon Fighting.

If I was going to houserule this I would put both classes on the druid cantrip list as they make more sense to me for a Paladin than the Cleric ones do for the most part.
 


The great thing about Wrathful Smite is it takes an action to try to shake it and you use that action to make a wisdom check, not a save so that check is done at disadvantage and gets no proficiency bonus.
You should also be prepared for your DM to rule that the text is in error, and a saving throw is required like other similar abilities.

Cleric cantrips make more sense for a devotion paladin, while druid cantrips fit an Ancients paladin better. But that sort of thing has been a problem in D&D for a while since Xanathars came out and we started to see subclasses playing against type a bit. The 'everything creepy and mildly evil' vibe of the Warlock spell list fits really uncomfortably with the Celestial pact warlock, for instance.

I'm about to hit 12th level with my paladin and I'm thinking of taking Magic Initiate as my feat. It'd be nice to have a ranged attack that doesn't suck (javelins are ok, but the range is pants and my DM uses a NASTY critical fumble table so making attack rolls at disadvantage for over half range is not something you want to be doing too often). Maybe the sorcerer list - Shield, Mind Sliver, and ... Message maybe? There's more poweful cantrips, but most of them are less thematic for my guy.
 


This isn't helpful now, but with paladins having cantrips in OneDnD, you will eventually be able to nab it with magic initiate.
Not seeing how this changes the Magic Initiate feat? I mean, it seems possible WotC might change it in OneD&D, but we have not seen a version of Magic Initiate for OneD&D yet.

Edited to add: I stand corrected. I forgot we got OneD&D's Magic Initiate in the first OneD&D playtest file on Character Origins.
