D&D 5E How can my sorcerer become a decent healer?

This is totally house-ruled, but I run a game in which there are no healing classes, and it takes place in Eberron.

What I did was let them find a Wand of Cure Wounds. It functions just like the Wand of Magic Missiles but with a different spell. Because he's a sorcerer he's taken Distant Spell as his Metamagic option so that he can spend 1 sorcery point to cast the spell from the wand at a range of 30 feet. It's come in handy on numerous occasions and the risk of it breaking when it's out of charges has been a very real concern to the party.

back in a 3.5 game iirc, the party of five had only one caster who could heal and it wasn't a cleric - was sub=par at best healer. They too went the wand of clw route for after fight heals and they focused on defense buffs and offense debuffs to reduce incoming damage during fights instead of in-combat heals. it tends to work OK.
