It is perhaps important to note that the book suggests a range of encounter levels, going from dirt easy to "run or die".

Uh... according to DMG p.49, 5% of encounters should be "EL 5+ levels higher" than the party's level -- that's described as "Overpowering".

So, "by the book" does NOT mean EL = Average Party Level.

Um- what exactly are you asking?

Is it- "Do you award xp by the book?"

Is it- "Do you tailor the EL of encounters to match your party?"

Is it- "Do you change a lot of the CRs in the books cause they don't seem right?"
