What is scary is that last night my level 1 PC went up against some kobolds in his first adventure They were intelligently played but were still fairly easy (a very small band of 'em), but I was paranoid that every time I went round a corner I'd get ballista'd

This is making me sooo want to throw a bunch of kobolds at my group (who incidentally have a kobold character, after the untimely death and botched ressurrection of the bard ...)

I won't start a SH for two reasons. First, I don't think anyone would read it (I'm not a very good writer) and second, it would take WAY too long to detail the history of the group (especialy since I wasn't there for 75% of it)

I'd read it. I promise!

You don't have to deal with the backstory too much- just a quick summary of where we're starting; heck, even just cut and paste everything from your writeup here as a start and you set the tone really well.

Bwahaha! You'll get more when I want and not a moment before! Hmm... starting a story hour is seeming a better and better idea with all the possible abuses of power.
