How did 3.0 DR work?

I am converting a 3.0 monster to 3.5. The monster is a 3.0 conversion of the Bhut found in X4 (which is very different from the Bhut WotC did in, Fiend Folio or MMII). The link in my sig leads to where the document with the conversion is.

I never understood how DR in 3.0 worked. The monster had Damage Reduction 10/+1. How would that be in 3.5?

In 3.5 that'd be DR 10/magic. Meaning it's ignored by any weapon with a magic enhancement bonus, i.e. your typical +1 longsword.

In 3.0 DR 10/+1 means that a weapon of at least +1 enhancement is needed to bypass the damage reduction. It didn't matter if it was magic or psionic enhancement though. Without an enhancement bonus on the weapon, you'd have to deal more than 10 damage with the attack or be useless, since the DR would reduce each such mundane blow by 10 points of damage. I.e. mundane longsword held by raging half-orc barbarian might deal 15 damage on a high roll, but only 5 damage to a critter with DR 10/+1.

Right.

There's DR X/Magic (bypassed by a +1 enhancement bonus) and DR X/Epic (bypassed by a +6 enhancement bonus).

Actually, it'd probably be DR 5/magic, seeing as how all DR ratings went down.

Far more important than working out the particulars of the DR conversion, you need to consider a NAME conversion. Can you just imagine for a moment the chaos that your game will be thrown into if the party is attacked by Bhut Monsters?

GM: "A pack of Bhuts leap out of the forrest and attack you!"

Player 1: "I charge the first Bhut I see!"

Player 2: "I ready an action to stick my spear in any Bhut that comes close enough!"

Player 3: "Gah! I'm up to my neck in Bhuts already! Somebody please extract me from these Bhuts!"

Player 4: "I've wounded my Bhut pretty badly already. My Bhut is on the line here!"

GM: "Alright guys, that's enough with the wisecracks. These monsters don't need to be the Bhut of any more jokes. Next person to make a Bhut joke...that's your ass!"
