How did you get into D&D?

When I was 11 one of my friend's older brothers' group broke up. He introduced the two of us to AD&D 1st edition (the hardcover). My first character was an elven fighter, and when I rolled social class I got a 100!!! :) My character ended up being the crown prince of the elven nation. Quite fun. After that short lived campaign (we only played about 3 times before he found a group to DM), I picked up the reigns for DM. The first things I DM'd were 'Classic D&D', the red, blue, black, and gold books. Went from that to 2nd ed. Never had the opportunity to DM 1st edition myself. Ah, what great memories. Great post Dragongirl!

I started playing D&D with these girls Debbie and Marcie. Debbie had a cleric named Elfstar. Marcie had a thief named Blackleaf. Our DM was this woman named Ms. Frost. It got kinda wierd so I left and started my own group and took over as DM. I heard Marcie later freaked out when Blackleaf got killed failing to notice a trap. Whatever. Anyway, I tried to get Debbie to join my new group, but she started seeing some fundamentalist dude named Mike and she quit gaming. :)

I remember that. Debbie kept in touch with me for some reason. Seems soon after her joyous conversion Mike turned out to be a repressed homosexual. They tried living the good married Christian life, but poor Mike was already HIV positive when the two met. Inside a year Debbie was HIV positive herself. It progressed to AIDS dementia just months later. Debbie spent the last few months of her life living under the delusion that if she could only progress a cleric character to high enough level she'd be able to cast Cure Diseaseon herself and get rid of the virus.

BTW, Ms. Frost now runs a V:TM campaign where the players take a sip of V8 every time their PC "drink from the herd". Hear tell she tried real blood at first, but the stuff kept clotting on her.

(That's why I'm dying for some official stuff about the blood war and interplanar crap. BLood war blood war blood war!!)

Uhm... You are aware of the old Planescape setting, aren't you?

You know, the one with the boxed supplement called "Hellbound: The Blood War"? ;)

Actually, now that I game more often, I don't play computer games as much either. NWN got about a week of play before I got frustrated because it wasn't like "the real thing". :DChris

I was extremely disapointed in NWN. I don't have anyone to play with online, and the single player game got boring after about 3 hours. I'm presently playing Icewind Dale II, and enjoying it.

But the bottom line is, I'm so busy with prep for my tabletop game that I don't have as much free time as I used to. When you add in the dog training classes I've been doing lately, I'm lucky to have 10 hours a week to play CRPGS.

My story...

Hey, fusangite, would you be interested in writing up the story involving your psychiatrist for Better World Roleplaying? We've been looking for people who had interesting personal stories to tell about how role-playing games have impacted their lives in a positive way.

Anyway, I first became aware of D&D when I was 13. My dad bought a copy of the blue book basic D&D set thinking that we might be able to play it. It was just the two of us, though, so we never did. Four years later, I was taking some summer courses at a college and myself and the young lady I was interested in got invited to a game. I was sort of reluctant, but she really wanted to go, so I went.

The young lady passed out of my life quickly, but D&D has been a part of me ever since.

Don't remember the year, but when I was young, I saw the TV commercials for the D&D electronic game and the Dark Tower electronic games. I thought they looked incredibly cool, so I asked for them that Christmas.

I guess my parents figured two electronic games were too much, so I received the Dark Tower electronic game, the D&D red-box basic set, and the AD&D monster manual.

After that, I played a little off and on until 8th grade. I stopped then and really didn't get back into it until freshman year in college.

I used to do a lot of model painting when I was younger. Mainly planes, cars, soldiers, etc. Then in this one model shop I came across a bunch of little models of monsters, with 2nd Edition Advanced D&D on them. After a while, I liked these so much that I bought a D&D starting box, and that was that.

Darn it Alan, I just laughed soda through my nose. That hurts!

When I was 10, my cousins moved back to NC from Indianapolis. They had played some there, and showed the game to me, probably because I liked mythology and Lord of the Rings. We tried to play, but never got far into the game.

So I had someone take me to the hobby store in a neighboring town so I could purchase my own copy. I bought the 1ed. DMG. Not quite sure why I didn't get the PHB, as it would have made more sense, but I still poured over that book, memorizing it. It didn't matter that I couldn't really 'play' with it, since I was an only child. I received the red boxed set for Xmas, which helped a lot.

Funny thing, I now see my cousins who have all aged and had their own children. They all look at me occasionally and ask if I still play. Heh.
