How do Forsakers find the magic items?

One of the player's in my weekly campaign is about to play a forsaker and the question has arisen as to how the character actually finds magical items to destroy? Does it have to have a friendly mage/cleric willing to help or is there some ability he can use himself?

To get back to the original question, I don't think the source of magic items really matters. IMC, we divide the better magic items among the group and the ones that we have little or no use for, we sell for profit. In a group with a Forsaker, I suppose the party could just give him those items to break later.

The idea of a spellcaster making items just so the Forsaker can break them seems really funny to me. I mean do you just go up to the party Wizard and say,
"Hey buddy, I need you to blow money and XP and make potions for me just so I can pour them in the river.":D

Ok, I agree that having a Forsaker create magic items is totally against the spirit of the class so how does the forsaker find his items. Let's say he's on his own and discovers a hoard of treasure, how does he know which items he should destroy?

Well, if he's a stickler, have them identified and appraised. That way, he'll know which ones to destroy that will give him what he needs, thus little goes to waste.

Start breaking the glowing stuff first, then stuff in bottles, then any scrolls or papers that you can't read, then any pointy sticks or staves. If that's not certain enough for you, ask the party mage or cleric to cast detect magic for you. :p

I think what the original poster is asking is how the Forsaker is supposed to know which items are magical. The Forsaker can't cast magic, and if he's played right, he shouldn't be all friendly like with the wizards and clerics. How does he know what is magical?

Unless it's a obvious magic item, you don't. That's why that particular forsaker ability/limitation is fairly stupid.

If a whole lot forsakers got together, might they invent a "magic geiger-counter" using natural means? A rock that isn't really a magic item, but points at magic?

In the original message, you actually mentioned a forsaker might be friendly with a cleric or mage. no can do dude, a Forsaker would, rather than sit down and have a tea party, stabe a mage in their sleep ;)

30% Armor, Shields, Rings, Rods, Staffs, and Wonderous Items something provides a clue to its function (I'm assuming that's beyond the obvoius 'protect me' for armor/shields)

20% of Ranged Weapons have a 'clue'

20% of Melee weapons 'glow', and an additional 15% provide a 'clue'.

Ignoring the obvious intelligent weapons clue.

Trial and Error might work (I forget how Forsakers restriction works heh), or possibly just reacting more so to an opponent using a weapon that he saw burst into flames in combat or similiar.

Observation at least works.

You can have a Forsaker adventure with a magic using class. You might run into problems, but no moer then Paladins adventureing with evil people.
