How do my animals know that?

Unlees our cat is sleeping, she is in the kitchen within seconds of food being prepared. She even went so far as put her head in an empty porclein bowl my mom was holding once. :uhoh:

My cat gets to lick ice cream from the bowl when we're done with it (unless it's chocolate). She's learned the sound of a spoon tinking against a bowl. She also knows the sound of a ring from a milk jug hitting the floor, since we give those to the cats.

Our youngest dog loves going upstairs. There's nothing special about it, its just another room.

However, no matter what time of day, no matter where she is, if you go up the (carpeted) stairs, she will come flying up them at full speed & barking.

I just had that happen tonight- going upstairs to check my e-mails at 2:15AM, she was asleep on the other side of the house and still chased me. Well, actually, she beat me up the stairs.

The only answer is that her hearing is so sharp that she can ID that sound (a faint creak barely audible to human ears) even when out cold.

I used that knowledge once, when I couldn't find him (and was concerned that he'd somehow slipped out of the apartment). I unwrapped a can, and he came running out of the closet where he'd been sound asleep. "Aha!", I said, and put the can away. The cat stared at me, clearly angry that I'd exploited his Achilles' heel. :D

LOL!

I've done something similiar also with our cats. And people say animals have no personalities. Obviously they never PO'd a cat before.

Mice are not exactly noisy, you know. :)

Mice are surprisingly loud, actually. And not just their squeaking, they make a lot of noise when they move, because they have a tendency to sort of gallop, instead of sneak.

When I was still living at home, our family dog did the exact same thing with the cheese block in the fridge. If you were getting out ANY other snack, she didn't care, but if it was the cheese, she was right there at your feet waiting for a treat!

One time, I wanted a midnight snack and the dog was upstairs, asleep, shut in the bedroom with my mother - and she still heard me, and scratched at the door until my mother woke up and came downstairs with her - thinking the dog needed to get outside. Nope, she wanted a piece of cheddar.
