D&D 5E How do Spell Points Work

wyrdone

First Post
I read in a post somewhere that the DM guide adds the option of using spell points instead of slots.

I did a forum search, but the results turn up posts with dozens of pages and I don't want to go combing through all of them to find it again.

I've been playing Psions since 2nd edition, and it sounds like taking the Wizard or Sorcerer and using spell points may be the best way to emulate that right now.

So if anyone can post the spell point rules, or point me to the thread that explains them I'd appreciate it.

Sooooo you want us to do it for you?

I was just hoping someone out there would remember "Oh right, that was in this post" or just knows the rules or copied them down then I was hoping they could share that knowledge.

I wasn't suggesting you guys comb through hundreds of posts for me.

No worries, I just like pointing out the absurd! :)

Spell point rules are in the DMG, not in the PHB.

The relevant part from that page:

Spell points: You get a number of spell points (and the maximum level that you can cast) depending on your level. You get 4 at 1st level, 6 at 2nd, 14 at 3rd, 64 at 10th level and 133 at 20th level. You can only cast a spell of each level per day at 6th and above, no matter how many points you have. Paladins and rangers halve their level and eldritch knights and arcane tricksters use one third of their level. A 1st level spell costs 2 points, 3 at 3rd, and then 5, 6, 7, 9, 10 and 11 at 9th level. [Update - the spell progression is actually [2-3-5-6-7-9-10-11-13].

Thank you. The link in the first reply gave me some info to work from, and thank you for posting said text TarionzCousin.

Working from the numbers given, and the Wizard's spell slot progression, I've determined the following info:

Each spell slot is worth a certian number of points. WotC only gave us point values for levels 1, 2, 3, 10, and 20. Playing around with those numbers I came up with the following values:
1st level slot = 2 points
2nd level slot = 3 points
3rd level slot = 5 points
4th level slot = 6 points
5th level slot = 7 points

Going off of that the number of spell points per level given adds up to match what WotC provided at level 1, 2, 3, and 10.

So for the first 10 character levels at least it looks like you get the following number of spell points:
1st level = 4 points (1st level spells)
2nd level = 6 points
3rd level = 14 points (2nd level spells)
4th level = 17 points
5th level = 27 points (3rd level spells)
6th level = 32 points
7th level = 38 points (4th level spells)
8th level = 44 points
9th level = 57 points (5th level spells)
10th level = 64 points

And then, as listed in the WotC text above, the cost to cast spell are as follows:
1st level spell = 2 points
2nd level spell = 3 points
3rd level spell = 5 points
4th level spell = 6 points
5th level spell = 7 points

That's what I've got so far. I'm sure some people would pare down the available spell list to make it more Psionic focused, but I've found in previous editions that most psionic powers have a magic spell equivalent, so I'm not worried about that part just yet.

I don't know how many spells known would be appropriate at each level, maybe the same number as the sorcerer? I don't have the PHB handy, and the sorcerer doesn't appear in the basic rules PDF.
