When I was first looking to get into D&D I found the glut of options to be quite scary. I thought if I couldn't buy all the books what was the point? Now I know I could have just played with the core options, but it stopped me from buying an D&D books for years.
5e's slower schedule made the game a lot more approachable for me. Buy the core books, buy Adventures I think are interesting, and play. Now I can even get the occasional bonus like SCAG, VGtM, and XGtE.
I wonder if there were enough people like me to make up for fewer individual books selling by getting a lot more core books sold.
