How do you all treat Leadership

To me and in all the games I have played. Followers are the DMs area with PC wants and the cohort is the PC's area with the ok of the DM.

Right now my PC is captured and I am playing the cohort as a PC till we can rescue my PC.

Works out great.

When a character is created I ask that in their Backgrounds they specify what alliegiances and connections they have in the world (ie the Factions to which they belong) So a Cleric usually will have Alliegeance to his Religion/Temple, a Fighter might be have been a squire to a Knight of the Order of the Rose, a Ranger might list his Village in the forest as his Faction, and a Rogue might be the son of the Provo of the Guild Merchant I give them appropriate skill bonuses if these backgrounds are good (eg Profession: Merchant +2 for the Rogue) and am also thinking of granting bonus feats but thats another thread.)

When a PC takes Leadership the Cohort must come from one of the organisations to which they are aligned so the fighter might take a Squire, the Rogue can get a Merchant (Expert), and your idea of another cleric would be fine imho

As to designing the Cohort - I let the player roll randomly for stats 3d6, and decide on skills, however I as DM assign feats.

Mr. Fidgit,

My Clr6/RSoP1 will take Leadership at level 9 (+2 levels of RSoP) and at that point will have a 20 Chr giving him a leadership score of 14.

I sent my wishlist to my DM and he sent me an email back explaining that I could go ahead and completely construct my cohort and that he had a "nasty" idea. Kind of makes me not want to take the feat on the one hand but on the other, intrigues me to find out what exactly he has in mind. I decided that I would follow the DMG and simply request the Race/Alignment/and Class of the cohort and leave the rest to him. (Actually all I asked for was a good aligned magic user that could have the feat CWI)

Delving a bit more into the details of the cohort, I think my DM is going to somehow tie the cohort into the spell, lesser planar ally. My DM can't stand min/maxing and will take the consequences of LPA very seriously - aka - no free 8 hd hit point blob creature to hack and slash for the cause. With that in mind, I have been hesitant to cast the spell - not to mention, our party still doesn't have a clue as to what's going on - we originally went there in on a justice mission to capture or kill Ridithidor's killer.

Ok, a bit of background - we went to the town where the old temple delvers had set up camp and met this freak, Ridithidor - my DM roleplayed him very much like a swashbuckling charismatic comedian (who was not trying to act any of those ways). Using Player knowledge that something was obviously up and there was a lot going on behind the scenes, our party somehow got on the topic of the ToEE and how there was probably some secret orginazation running the show. Strider really played it up (all of this is available in Solid Snake's Story Hour - labeled ravenloft). Unfortunately, in attempting to push the limits of irony, Ridithidor disappeared and we later found him assassinated at the bottom of a river. Strider took this very seriously and felt completely responsable for his death. He then made a blood oath to bring Ridithidor's killer to justice (sliced his hand open and wrote in his own blood a message which he posted at the town inn that addressed Ridithidor's killer(s) and said he was hunting them). Unfortunately, in attempts to rescue the party in RttToEE when they encountered the Silverback ape, he was killed. Lathander (the cleric of Pelor - yes he has that name on purpose) spoke to Strider's soul and agreed to take up the charge of bringing Ridithidor's killer to justice. At this point, that is the only reason the party is even at the Temple - they still know jack about Tharizdun, the connection to the war, and the sacrifices. I as a player have put 2 and 2 together knowing that nothing my DM ever does it at random and it is all ALWAYS connected (somehow), but our players haven't a clue. This is the other reason why he has not cast the spell yet - it would seem odd to call upon some of the highest aid from his deity to accomplish a task he personally agreed to that doesn't directly involve his faith.

However, my party is getting to the point that the additional help will be required in order to simply survive (don't forget - it's RttToEE). Not to mention he has seen evidence of the cultists and the sacrifices they perform. I am working on finding out more information that will legitimate summoning the LPA.

BTW - as far as I understand it, the cohort gets 50% of the XP that the PC does, simply for being the cohort. Thus, he could be in his lab crafting things and still get the XP while my PC goes and kicks some evil toosh. So, I don't think that the cohort would have any problem making items for my PC. Moreover, this will be roleplayed out, and my PC would solicit a cohort for that express purpose - to aid him in his quest by being a supplier of sorts. Finally, I don't think it would be a problem at all if there was a transaction involved for the item - in the form of money. In fact, this would probably required and could be beneficial in that the cohort could then make even more items.

IMC, cohorts are all in the DM's hands - but Leadership does not exist as a feat, cohorts are acquired through roleplaying.
If your PC wants a cohort he or she can start recruiting. A wishlist etc. is also possible, but subject to DM's approval. Currently, our duelist/bladedancer is training a student in her school and has hired a former enemy as a guard/companion.

I aim to populate my campaign with so many NPCs that it should offer many options for cohorts, and getting a cohort should feel natural.

However, if I had a cohort who had it, then he/she could do all the crafting for me. They gain 50% of the XP I gain so they could still be doing ok XP wise while making the item all in the safety of their laboratory.

Um, that's not really how it works - at least according to the DMG.

The cohort gets a half share of XP for adventures they go on. Not 50% of what you make, but a half share - so if you have 4 characters and 1 cohort, you're dividing the XP into 4.5 shares, not 4. And, if the cohort isn't participating in the XP-earning activities at all, they're not getting anything out of it.

Seriously - if you leave your cohort at home and you go off to kill a dragon, how are they going to learn anything from it?
