Make the magic items grow in power, and tailor to the character's personality/fighting style, so that the players don't treat it like disposable underwear.
Give the magic items interesting features instead of numerical bonuses. If its powerful, then once per long rest, if its weaker then per short rest. If its ribbon/niche, allow it multiple uses or spammable.
