I have noticed a strong tendency on the part of PCs to resort to threats when faced with a recalcitrant NPC. Cheaper than bribery, I suppose.

Yeah this player always resorts to threats... of course the PC's would've been tossed overboard to their deaths. Earlier in the night the same players tried to sneak a gnome into a ball under the dress of the sorcerer. The gaurds caught it (rolled an 18 on the spot opposed to a gnome artificers hide check of 15) So the player grabs the gnome guard as he is going to pull gnome artifcer from under the dress. Then the gnome guard calls for back up. This frustrated the player and he made a huge deal about that. "Im just grabbing him, Im not attacking him, why is he calling for back up?" I replied "Because your a seven foot tall construct, you just grabbed him, and your lady friend is trying to smuggle a gnome in her underpants!" He thought it was totally unfair. Im seriously considering giving him the boot. Problem is he can be a cool guy when were not playing D&D and his SO is a pretty good roleplayer.

I really did enjoy this. The gnome and the sorceress are some of the better players in the group. Also when they got caught they were ready to try and find another way in.

Perhaps you should talk to his SO and see if she agrees with your opinion of his demeanour. If so, suggest she has a talk to him about complaining during play.

Of course, your secret plan is to get her to dump him so you can roleplay without that loser.

Another possibility (that won't result in you going to jail) is that you just put a foot down and tell him that he's a whiner, disrupting the game and that he should put himself together.

Well, I have no need to do any of this anymore. The guy is perfectly nice outside of gaming and throws a good New Year's party. Now that I don't game with him, I'd rather not have him killed, if it's all the same to you.
