How do you feel about the ENnies so far?

As for those who chose not to enter, I think it's unfortunate, and while I agree that they should not be entitled to all the privileges of those who do enter, I think that since the main purpose of the awards is to recognize excellence, then there should be some mechinism of honoring a great product, even if the business supervisors of that project choose not to submit.

Thanks for listening (reading?),
David

But then you run the risk of really going against the publishers wishes. We had a few publishers that flatly said they don't like awards and had no interest in participating in any way. We have to respect their choice.

WEll, I doubt that since even I don't know who thise "respected designers" are.

Wow. You don't know who they are, so they must not be respected, huh?

Here's a snippet from the site:

The Award is decided by a panel of people working in all areas and at all levels of the hobby-games business, who have all distinguished themselves in their field. It is up to each member of the judging committee to decide whether they will reveal their membership, but the full membership list will not be made public. Most of the members of the Diana Jones judging committee are anonymous, but Peter Adkison, Matt Forbeck, John Kovalic and James Wallis have all revealed their membership. New members are invited at the discretion of the existing members.

Disclaimer: I have nothing to do with these awards, and really don't care about them at all

If that's the case, then list those publishers when the votes are taken.

A simple instruction like "At their request, the following publishers do not wist to participate. Votes for their products will not be counted" would do the trick.

Btw

I'm sorry if I've come across as a tad defensive, by the way. I really do appreciate hearing from everyone- fans, publishers, etc. Every word is taken into consideration, because I hope to be able to hold my position as biz manager next year and continue to evolve the awards into a real, tangible force in fandom and the industry.
I think we've come pretty far this year, and there's plenty of room for more improvements, and I cherish everyone taking the time to let us know what they think.

One of the reasons for keeping the awards numbered under twenty was to keep the ceremony short and sweet. I'll see how well this years' runs, and that'll help determine how many more (or less) awards we can hand out next year.

I think the ENnies are amazing if but for the fact they started so small and are now official awards at GenCon.

I am glad WOTC stays out and frankly what do they have to gain by participating. It is a no-win situation for them: If they lose it's a shocker that gives them a black eye, and if they win - well, they're supposed to win.

I may be the only who disagrees with this. I think if they expect they would blow away the compition they are fooling themselves or are being unreasticially egomaniacs. Sure, they sell the most books but that has no bearing on quality, and its the quality that the ENniers judge. I think Wizards needs to enter so they can see just how well their books do stack up against the compition, casue those other guys right now are doing really good.

Then why do they participate in the Origins Awards? (I am not picking on Origins, I am just pointing out that your logic <if true> would follow for All awards.)

My reaction to the ENnies is that, if a publisher's site has one of those "nominated for an ENnie", or "Winner of the 20XX ENnie" logo's, then they are supporting awareness of the awards (and this site by association). Those are the publishers I tend to check first if I am looking for something new.

Probably, yes :).

No, I think it would just be a simple look at market penetration numbers.

True, this is important for the judges' picks. If they made it into the final vote, they'd just win because their books are well known by most people, unlike their competitors'.
